One dealer calls it the Mattress Corridor, some call it the Mattress Mile or the Mattress Mall, since it's similar to the concept of the Henderson Auto Mall, where you can pick and choose all types of cars within walking distance.
One big difference, though, is you can drive away in a car; carrying a mattress home on foot, fighting its bulkiness and willingness to flop one way when you want it to flop the other, is a whole other story.
Of the seven mattress stores, Mattress Firm has three locations and Best Mattress, Mattress Discounters of Las Vegas, Mattress Outlet and Sleep Center each have one.
The eight mattress-selling merchandise stores on or near Marks Street are Costco, Ashley Furniture, La-Z-Boy, Macy's, J.C. Penney, Big Lots, Colleen's Classic Consignment and Sears.
Mattress Firm is the largest mattress retailer in the country, with 700 company-owned and franchised outlets in 49 markets in 23 states – 22 stores in Clark County alone – so it would be expected to find one on Marks Street, but three?
"We try to find convenient locations that work for us," said Sunni Goodman, communications manager for the Houston, Tex.-based company that recently bought out Bedtime Mattress and Mattress Direct, also on Marks Street. "The primary factors we use to select a new location are convenience and visibility."
Having a heavily visited Wal-Mart and 99 Store in the same shopping center doesn't hurt, either.
Across Marks Street is Mattress Discounters of Las Vegas, the third-largest retailer in Southern Nevada, which is celebrating the grand opening of its ninth location.
Mattress Discounters of Las Vegas is a separately run division of Walker Furniture and has no ties with the national company of the same name.
Having so many mattress stores close to each other doesn't bother Mattress Discounters management.
"The competition is awesome," General Manager Jorge Lezcano said. "It's the best it can be for the consumer, because you become aggressive. Competition is great because when you're that close together, it keeps everybody on their toes and their pencils sharpened."
Mattress Firm, which will be going on the New York Stock Exchange following its current initial public offering process, talks about competition with a little less enthusiasm.
"The retail bedding industry in the United States is highly competitive and highly fragmented," the company stated in its registration documents with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. "Participants in the bedding industry compete primarily based on store location, service, price, product selection, brand name recognition and advertising. There can be no assurance that we will be able to continue to compete favorably with our competitors in these areas …. Accordingly, we may face periods of intense competition in the future that could have a material adverse effect on our planned growth and future results of operations."
One of Mattress Firm's competitors, Mattress Outlet, is tucked away, almost out of view, in a shopping center on the northeast corner of Marks Street and Sunset Road, but that hasn't stopped them from bringing in customers.
"The competition is tough, but with our store location here, where they can see us from the (U.Graphene is not a semiconductor, not an oil paintings for sale , and not a metal,S. 95 southbound) off-ramp, business has been good," said Matthew Sheeler, president of Mattress Outlet, which opened there in 2005. "Even with the economy the way it is, we're still doing OK."
