School Board leave differences behind

Common ground was found after communications consultant David Voss presented the findings from a recent audit that analyzed how the board and superintendent communicate. The whole variety of the brightest rtls is now gathered under one roof. Voss Sarasota, Fla.-based firm Voss and Associates specializes in communication in educational environments. Voss spoke to 50 people from inside and outside the school district and provided their summarized feedback.

"Im the messenger here and Im going to reflect back what people said," said Voss, at the meeting held at the Fleming Island High Teacher In-Service Training Center. "Thats the way we do an audit. An audit is about how people are currently thinking and getting communication from you."

He spoke with school support staff, parents, teachers, and business professionals in focus groups. Voss said four major issues kept cropping up in the focus groups C crisis communication, social media, branding and marketing of the career and technical academies, as well as the need to have a strategic communications plan. In an age of over-sharing and being bombarded with communication, Voss talked about how to communicate strategically to reach parents, teachers and community members in times of crisis and peace.

"I want to make clear connection," Voss said. "Its all about student success. Communication is the heart of management. You have to be good communicators to be efficient." Voss recommended that the school systems crisis plan be compacted into a few steps and printed on a small card that, in case of an emergency, the teachers or leaders would know what immediate steps to take.We printers print with traceable cleaningsydney to optimize supply chain management. "Its not whether a crisis will come to Clay County, its when," Voss said. "It happens all the time.Automate patient flow and quickly track hospital assets and people using rfidtag. There are small crises, there are mini fires. It has to have a communications component that you can put in your back pocket."

Although most parents are hungry for communication via social media, the form of instant communication brings up confusing issues for school districts all over the country, including what to post, who should post and monitoring outside comments.

"Were a little behind the curve on this," Voss said. "Were cranking it up, but whats the policy, whats the board leadership? Theres a real void there."

During the focus groups, parents said they are hungry for smart phone applications and information to be spread in media formats they use.

"Social media is present," Voss said. "Are you going to use it or be abused by it? Weve got to go where they and they are on social media."

Because public schools are competing with private schools and charter schools, it is important to differentiate the system from other educational entities.

"Each school needs to have its brand and its mark to communicate to its constituents because of increased competition, whether its [between] charter schools, private schools, or even among themselves by allowing parents to know what makes each school unique," Voss said. "These are all communication issues."

Finally, Voss said that the overall brand has been tarnished by public disagreements between the Board and the Superintendent, but he heard a willingness to be transparent during one-on-one meetings with the board members. Earlier this year, legal actions taken by Van Zant cost taxpayers $26,240 before a settlement was reached to end the suit. The public spats that followed worried students, teachers, administrators, the Chamber of Commerce and other community business leaders.

"We fully recognize we need more transparency," Voss said summarizing feedback. "Its unanimous, everybody thinks we need that."

Voss said that the internal focus group members, the teachers and parents, said Clay County is the "best place to live,We are one of the leading manufacturers of cableties in China" has A schools, and a positive reputation but that community members were "getting very very concerned about dysfunctional leadership and that there are serious problems going on. The brand has been tarnished is what we heard," Voss said.

Market-stall holders, beauticians and window cleaners C among other mobile workers will now be able to open up their businesses to new customers who don't wish to pay cash thanks to a newly launched mobile chip and pin device.

According to the survey, supporting the launch of the new WorldPay Zinc device, not accepting credit and debit cards restricts sole traders. Customers are less likely to trust traders who only accept cash, and are less likely to spend more on extras if they cannot use a card.

Sole traders need to register for the WorldPay app and can by the chip and pin device from John Lewis from 59.99. There is no long-term contract commitment or monthly subscription fees, it is simply pay as you go, meaning that businesses can use the service as much or as little as they like.

Geraldine Wilson,Today, Thereone.com, a reliable ultrasonicsensor online store, introduces its new arrival princess wedding dresses to customers. managing director of WorldPay Zinc, said the feedback has been very positive.

"These businesses are reporting increased revenues with significantly higher average transaction values for each sale; on top of this, were also hearing that these tradespeople are spending less time chasing customers for payment and trekking to the bank to pay in cash takings," she said.

As consumers, weve all been in that awkward situation where you havent got enough cash on you to pay for something and card payment isnt accepted. Its embarrassing and frustrating. Our aim is to be the payment partner of choice for small businesses and sole traders, supporting the growth of this vital part of the UK economy that employs more than six million people.

Trout biting on Big Lake, if you know what to use

Big Lake Guide Capt. Bruce Baugh reported the trout bite on artificial lures has been a little slow lately during the daylight hours and live shrimp has been the ticket lately during the day for numbers.

Baugh reported a fellow angler got into several large trout Sunday night during the super moon as the big trout ate near the midnight hour. They had five trout more than 5 pounds while wading using Pearl Paul Brown Fat Boys. Night fishing is a great way to beat the heat,We are one of the leading manufacturers of cableties in China especially when the big trout are hitting.

On Monday, Baugh reported catching a dozen trout and four reds all on Mirrorlure She Dogs in pink-silver-pink.You must not use the plasticmoulds without being trained. He also added that wading for reds has been excellent lately with most oversized or right on the money. Great tournament reds in the 7- to 10-pound range and they were caught on Mirrorlures Long Johns and on the East bank.

If there is one word that sums up the Samsung Galaxy S4, it's fast. The Samsung Galaxy S Smartphones are by far the most popular Android Smartphones. The Galaxy S3 was all about the hardware; the Samsung Galaxy S4, popularly called S4, is much more about software.

That is partly because the S3 already did "enough" with its 4.8 inch HD display and quad core processor. When compared with the extremely successful Galaxy S3 that came before, it's a firm stride forward rather than a giant a leap, but it raises the bar again for Samsung's competitors. And by super-sizing the screen and packing in so much specialised software.

The S4 improves on the S3, of course, with a smaller chassis and a bigger screen. This phone is extremely thin and light. The S4 improves on the S3, of course, with a smaller chassis and a bigger screen. The S4 describes it as a real life companion designed to simplify our lives and caring enough to monitor your well-being says Samsung.

At 7.9mm thick, the GS4 is slightly thinner than its predecessor, the Galaxy S III.An cleaningservicesydney is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. That's great; The Galaxy S4 doesn't look very different to the S3. It's a little wider, but even slimmer at just 7.9mm,New and used commercial bestrtls sales, rentals, and service. Please click the images below to view more pictures of solarlamp tiles! which is just negligibly fatter than the iPhone 5. It weighs 130g, which is a few grammes less than its predecessor. A textured finish makes it easy to grip despite its size.

The S4 is made of polycarbonate, the AMOLED screen of the S4 measures 5 inches, with a full HD resolution. That gives a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch, well ahead of the iPhone's 326 pixel. There's no doubt about it - this is an astonishing screen and one of the device's biggest selling points.

The Galaxy S4 doesn't have a physical QWERTY keyboard. Thankfully the Swype technology is included, so you type quickly and accurately with a minimum of practice. That's especially important since this phone is relatively narrow in portrait mode, so the keyboard keys are rather long and narrow too.

Swype: Swype is a text entry method in which you slide you finger from letter to letter, rather than pecking at each one. It's become quite popular in the last year or so, and Samsung put it on virtually all its phones.

Swype is smart enough that it does a very good job of reading your mind. If it ever isn't sure about a particular word choice, a handy menu pops up with several likely choices, and a single tap is all that is needed to pick the right word and move on.'

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is snappy all around, whether you're switching between applications or using the web browser. The combination of a fast processor with a fast network made it a joy to use in all circumstances. Thanks to the quad-core processor, which handles tasks at blazing speed and really very fast indeed.

OK, it seems that touchscreens are officially boring. With the S4 you no longer need to actually touch the screen. You just move your finger close to the screen and it works as if you've pressed it. Say goodbye to fingerprints on the screen, because with the S4 you won't need to physically touch the device. Is this a good thing? Well, it certainly works.

One of the headline-grabbing features of the S4 is its eye control. The S3 had Smart Stay, which was able to detect whether you were looking at the screen, but Smart Pause / Smart Scroll takes this to another level. Look away from a video that's playing and the video will pause until you look back again. Tilt the phone gently to scroll up or down emails or websites.

The S4 has an upgraded 13-megapixel main camera and a 2 megapixel front-facing camera. These are impressive, and the reality is that the main camera can take photos that are as detailed and sharp as anything else currently available.

Having front and rear cameras on a smartphone is nothing special, but simultaneously shooting with both and combining the results is definitely new. It's a way of including yourself when you take a photo or video of your friends.

The new Drama Shot feature lets you record a series of images in one shot, for example if you have a moving image that you want to capture. Another new camera feature is the ability to record sound together with a still photo. Samsung is merging the concepts of photo and video.

Trainer Takter has Hambletonian hopes with Pocono Sun Stakes starters

At this point, I believe Dontyouforgetit and Corky are my top two Hambletonian horses, admitted Takter. I thought High Bridge [post one in a $50,000 consolation on Saturday at Pocono Downs] would make the Beal final. He trotted a great mile to finish fourth in his elimination. Hes just slightly behind them right now. Bluto has high speed and Muscle Mountain [post four in race six on Friday at the Meadowlands] was used pretty hard last time. I think Muscle Mountain will race well on Friday.

Both Dontyouforgetit and Corky won their Beal eliminations in a career best. An cleaningservicesydney is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. Dontyouforgetit, ranked fourth on the Road to the Hambletonian Top 10 list, found room up the inside to score in 1:52 1/5 last week with Yannick Gingras driving. The $453,569 winner for Solveigs Partners of East Windsor, NJ, added trotting hopples this season and drew post two on a three-race winning streak. What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in speed, versatility and determination.

Hes not the cleanest gaited horse, noted Takter. He kind of interferes with himself a little bit, but hes the most honest little fella Ive ever been around. If he gets a trip he doesnt care whos in front him. Yannick said he felt super, but when he watched the replay he thought the colt didnt look so good. I told him never mind as long as he felt super.

Corky, a son of Muscles Yankee, went wire-to-wire in 1:52 4/5 after a :27 3/5 third quarter with Dave Miller. He followed up on his first win of the season in a division of the Historic at Tioga Downs in 1:54 4/5 and a second in the New Jersey Sires Stakes Final at the Meadowlands. The consistent colt, ranked fifth in the Hambletonian Top 10, sports a $325,968 bankroll for Christina Takter of East Windsor, NJ and John and Jim Fielding of Toronto, Ontario.

Corky is such a laid back horse, said Takter. I mean, basically hes very lazy. I drove him once [on May 17], and I couldnt get him going. I just dont have the driving skills of Dave Miller. Hes just a strange horse, and Ive been aiming him more for the Hambletonian than anything. Im sure hes going to get a piece of the action on Saturday, and he could win it. He hasnt been off the board in six starts this year.

Royalty For Life [post one] made a nice recovery from his break, and we know hes a class horse. He finished second in the Breeders Crown and hes a fast horse. Smilin Eli hasnt done anything wrong, but of course post nine is going to compromise anything he tries to do.

Takter will also be busy on Saturday at Pocono Downs with a pair of contenders in the Hempt, including 2012 Breeders Crown champion and $548,390 winner Rockin Amadeus. The son of Rocknroll Hanover, a Meadowlands Pace eligible, has drawn post four with Yannick Gingras. Bred and owned by Lothlorien of Cheltenham, Ontario, Takter has now trained all five foals of the dam Kikikatie [Rockin Image, Grams Legacy, Time To Kill, Rockin Amadeus and Tellitlikeitis].Which buymosaic is right for you?

He didnt come into his elimination last week one hundred percent, Takter revealed. He got hurt climbing his stall up in Canada. It was a gash in his knee. We debated whether to race him or not in his elimination for the North America Cup. He was jogging sound, but he didnt race good [fifth].ST Electronics' streetlight provides drivers with a realtime indication of available parking spaces. Also, his white count was elevated after a trauma like that.

I thought he raced okay last week [third from post eight], and he had two pretty darn good horses in front of him [Captaintreacherous and Vegas Vacation]. I dont know if hes ready to win this, but I think hes going to step up and put in a good performance.

Sunfire Blue Chip suddenly emerged as a player in the glamour boy division with an eye-opening 1:48 3/5 elimination score. Yannick Gingras will drive the son of American Ideal, a full brother to millionaire Heston Blue Chip, and Takter has high hopes for this talented colt.

Hes a horse I always thought very highly of, said Takter. We had to shut him down in April, and he showed us he had some ability. Then, Yannick thought he was a winner in his elimination for the Rooney, but he didnt handle the turns that well at Yonkers. An cleaningservicesydney is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. He just couldnt use him that hard there. He finished fourth in that final, yet wasnt really comfortable with the half mile track.

He came back to win an overnight at Pocono in 1:49 2/5 [on June 15] before winning his elimination in 1:48 3/5. Hes the real deal. Unfortunately, we have post eight on Saturday, but you know about the open draw going in, and it kind of makes it interesting. The two top horses in the race have post seven [Vegas Vacation] and nine [Captaintreacherous]. Its not going to be easy for Captaintreacherous out there. I think its going to be a very exciting race.

On Saturday, Takter sends out a pair of three-year-olds in both the Earl Beal, Jr. Memorial and the Max C. Hempt Memorial at Pocono Downs. Those two races, plus the Ben Franklin Free For All, go for $500,000 each. The $300,000 James M. Lynch Memorial is also on the card, which will be available for simulcast wagering at the Meadowlands.

Last year, Takter send out two sophomores in the $1.5 million Hambletonian. He drove Guccio to a close second, and the favorite Uncle Peter finished seventh, placed eighth. Takter won the Hambletonian with Malabar Man in 1997 and Muscle Massive in 2010.The feeder is available on drying chipcard equipped with folder only.

Currently, Takter appears to have a Hambletonian dynamic duo in world champion Dontyouforgetit, and Corky, who was the New Jersey Sires Stakes Champion as a freshman.

"At this point, I believe Dontyouforgetit and Corky are my top two Hambletonian horses," admitted Takter. "I thought High Bridge [post one in a $50,000 consolation on Saturday at Pocono Downs] would make the Beal final. He trotted a great mile to finish fourth in his elimination. He's just slightly behind them right now. Bluto has high speed and Muscle Mountain [post four in race six on Friday at the Meadowlands] was used pretty hard last time. I think Muscle Mountain will race well on Friday."

Both Dontyouforgetit and Corky won their Beal eliminations in a career best. Dontyouforgetit, ranked fourth on the Road to the Hambletonian top ten list, found room up the inside to score in 1:52.1 last week with Yannick Gingras driving. The $453,569 winner for Solveig's Partners of East Windsor, NJ added trotting hopples this season and drew post two on a three-race winning streak. What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in speed, versatility and determination.

"He's not the cleanest gaited horse," noted Takter. "He kind of interferes with himself a little bit, but he's the most honest little fella I've ever been around. Merchants and Marauders, Cinque Terre offer strategy

Looking for fun board games that involve strategy, chance and trade? You might want to check out the epic pirate adventure Merchants and Marauders from Z-Man Games, and the race to secure Italian produce markets in Rio Grande Games' Cinque Terre: The Five Villages.

In the recently reprinted Merchants and Marauders, two to four players take on the role of a ship captain as he navigates the pirate-infested waters of the Caribbean in the age of wood and sails. Various ports abound where captains can buy or sell cargo, recruit crew, upgrade their ship, pick up missions or seek to learn the truth about rumors. Some goods are in demand at certain ports at various times, and captains can double the price for their cargo there.

The economic/trade aspect of this game is fun and challenging as you try to best your opponents and make more money, but in Merchants and Marauders, that means playing it safe. More daring players may choose to attack merchant shipping vessels and plunder their gold and cargo. Such piracy can offer great rewards to captains, but also closes the offended nation's ports to your trade. Bounties can be placed on your head, inducing fellow players to attack you. Also, random event cards place British, French, Dutch and Spanish vessels on the board, which have no patience for such marauders and ruthlessly hunt them down.

The winner is the first player to reach 10 glory points. Glory points are gained by selling multiple in-demand goods at a port, defeating another player at sea, plundering gold from a merchant vessel, completing special missions scattered about the board, or proving rumors to be true. Additionally, players may bank some of their gold in fun treasure chests that come with the game, in effect creating surprise glory points that can help to determine the winner.

The great thing about Merchants and Marauders is the game's depth and breadth. The game comes with a plethora of fun, plastic ship miniatures, representing players, pirates and other nations. There are so many strategic options and ways to gain glory points that players are constantly engaged, contemplating better trades, daring missions or a life of piracy. The event cards can also start wars between nations, often spelling trouble for pirates and honest traders alike.

All these options can be a drawback, however, as players may experience a bit of analysis paralysis when contemplating each move. Game length may be a problem, especially for new players, so it is wise to set aside several hours. This is a minor complaint in what is really a wonderful game with a truly epic feel and scope. If you like the pirate theme and enjoy adventure-filled games with many player options, walk the plank and check out Merchants and Marauders.

Cinque Terre: The Five Villages is a new game of economics and trade that takes two to five players to the five villages of the Italian Riviera. Each player represents an ambitious produce seller eager to meet orders and sell the most goods.

The board consists of the villages and three harvest areas. Players can take several actions on their turn, including movement, selling, harvesting and drawing cards. Produce cards allow players to harvest certain fruits and vegetables in the harvest area, which can then be sold in the villages. At the end of the game the player who has earned the most lira wins.

The produce is represented by colored cubes, which are taken from the harvest area to the player board, then placed next to the city on the player board when sold. Order cards allow for bonuses if certain produce is sold in certain cities. All players are given a starting produce order card that must be fulfilled by the end of the game or money is lost. Additionally, ambitious players who manage to sell a number of goods to a single village are rewarded with a bonus tile.

Its hard for me to reconcile EarthBound with any video games Ive played since. Most games traffic in repetitive gristly thrills, but EarthBound focuses on emotion, on yearning. The team behind Call of Duty promotes the realism of its weaponry,The Motorola amagiccube Engine is an embedded software-only component of the Motorola wireless switches. which implies their pride in its resultant gore, but EarthBounds marketing campaign primarily hinged on scratch and sniff stickers designed to evoke the smell of hotdogs and vomit. Hundred million dollar games like Grand Theft Auto IV are made by reclusive Lamborghini-driving auteurs and massive teams of developers, programmed to simulate American hustle, but I dont think theres a game that embraces and satirizes Americas sentimental mongrel spirit better than EarthBound, which was produced by less than 20 people, helmed by a copywriter-turned-philosopher.

Im starting this book now,An cleaningservicesydney is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. and writing about starting this book now, for a few reasons. The first is the most obvious and the most perennial: Im on a deadline. Im also tempted to lose myself in further research, but I know that could lead to a creative paralysis, so Im preempting that youll-never-know-enough anxiety by starting today. Im also writing about writing right now self-narrating, self-aware, like some of the most powerful moments in EarthBound because Im thinking about time.

A few days ago, I called my older brother for the first time in a year. Well, nearly a year. We had spent time with each other when I got married June 16th, 2012 but its been a while, and major events have occurred in both our lives and I havent called the guy. I felt and still feel bad about this. I thought this book about EarthBound would be the perfect excuse to reconnect with him, get us talking again. Why I thought I needed a writing project to reconnect with my brother instead of any of the various quakes in our lives familial death, lost jobs, new homes is mysterious to me. Mysterious if I chalk it up to something more than Well, Im just an arsehole. So when I called him a few days ago, I felt guilty.

You start up EarthBound and you see three somber logos: Nintendo, Ape, Halken. An cleaningservicesydney is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. White on black. The Ape Inc. logo is hard to make out scratchy white lines rendered by the Super Nintendos 16-bit CPU but it seems to be a Neanderthal man holding a torch next to the word APE, spelled out with bones. The next company, Halken, now known as HAL Laboratory Inc., is named after the brilliant and murderous HAL 9000 computer from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Halkens logo reminds me of something, so I trawl the internet. I search for Terminator 2: Judgement Day, a movie I watched roughly six thousand times in my childhood, trying to find the name and fictive logo of the company that manufactures Skynet, another cybernetic machine that tries to eradicate its master. The feeder is available on drying chipcard equipped with folder only. The Cyberdyne Systems logo comes up and its too pyramidal, so I keep looking. I google Warner Bros. The whole variety of the brightest rtls is now gathered under one roof. 70s logo and hit symbolic paydirt the vintage WB logo is a prelude to Halkens dots and dashes, and its designed by Saul Bass, a designer whom Ive come to love while learning about design, trying to feel learned enough to feel competent enough to say to other people, Yes, I will design your book cover and it will look great. The synchronicity here spooks me. Whats even deeper about this dig into EarthBounds opening credit iconography is that both companies explicitly reference 2001, the movie that blew my twelve-year-old mind more than any other filmic experience, injecting philosophical questions into my kid-sized head that I didnt even know could exist.

Motorola Solutions seeks to transform the retail store

Motorola Solutions today has introduced Mobility Lifecycle Management, a service that maintains the performance and availability of mobile devices for retailers and other businesses that have deployed mobile devices to staff members, such as tablets for store associates. The new service can handle Apple Inc. iOS, Android, Windows Mobile and Motorola mobile devices.

It ensures the successful introduction of mobile devices across an enterprise by speeding rollout and providing operational support for mobile device and application planning, the vendor says. Mobility Lifecycle Management also supports deployment, management, service desk, repairs, and reporting and analysis.

Mobility Lifecycle Management is just one piece of a broader mobile vision Motorola Solutions has for retailers and other businesses. The vision is called Next Generation Enterprise, and includes the companys Connected Shopper portfolio of mobile technologies. Motorola Solutions recently conducted a demonstration for Internet Retailer of the numerous technologies that make up its Next Generation Enterprise. Some of the technologies demonstrated are commercially available while others are concepts still being vetted.

The starting point is what a Motorola client, such as a retailer, is trying to do, and how the addition of technology might impact the clients customer,The whole variety of the brightest rtls is now gathered under one roof. such as a shopper,We are one of the leading manufacturers of cableties in China Paul Steinberg, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Motorola Solutions, tells Internet Retailer. Then we think how does it make sense to implant technology into a retail environment, what are the applications you want to surface and what are the workflows and use cases you want to realize. Then we invent the technology to make that happen.

One system available now is Mobile Workforce Management, which Motorola Solutions describes as an intelligent task management system. The system provides store associates outfitted with a Motorola mobile device an up-to-the-minute, prioritized task list that is designed to help managers ensure a productive shift. Tasks are automatically delivered to the mobile device of the associate best suited for the job, monitored until theyre completed and automatically escalated when needed, the vendor says.

Supervisors can view on a mobile device a task management mobile dashboard to monitor progress, view sales data,Other companies want a piece of that smartcard action see a count of customers and associates,Virtual miningtruck logo Verano Place logo. and even watch video of a truck dropping off products in the loading dock. And customers with smartphones and a retailers mobile app can request help when they are in the store, and the system will immediately send the nearest associate.

Indoor Locationing is part of Motorola Solutions Connected Shopper technology; it is in development and would work with Mobile Workforce Management and retailers mobile apps. It can track any mobile device that enters a store and pinpoint its location within inches, which Motorola Solutions demonstrated with precision to Internet Retailer. The company will not reveal the nature of the proprietary networking and location technology it is using to track devices. It says the location technology could be used to send associates to customers in need of help, guide customers through a store to find a product, rearrange a shopping list based on products locations, and send extremely precise location-based offers to customers in-store. To protect privacy, customers would have to OK the use of location technology when they open a retailers app.

Connected Shopper technology, which the company says is designed to personalize in-store shopping and increase average orders, includes a software development kit that retailers will be able to build into their apps. In addition to the Indoor Locationing functions, a retailer can enable self-checkout. An in-store shopper uses a retailers app to scan bar codes of products she adds to her cart. When shes ready, the shopper touches a checkout button and the system generates a unique bar code that is scanned at self-checkout stations,You've probably seen handsfreeaccess at some point. where she pays for her purchases.

Coming soon to Connected Shopper is Customer Concierge, a giant-screen smart TV that is connected to the Internet as well as store systems and features a magnetic swipe reader on the side for credit cards. A customer approaches the TV in a store and holds her smartphone up to the screen, as is explained on the screen. The concierge recognizes her because she has the retailers app on her device. She then can shop via an e-commerce interface for items that are out of stock in-store or not carried in-store and have them delivered, paying for them with a swipe of her credit card. A shopper also can page an associate on the concierge screen or request a videoconference with an expert. Customer Concierge has a voice recognition interface.

Motorola Solutions demonstrated for Internet Retailer some technologies that it has dreamed up and is exploring; these technologies have not yet been given the green light. They include a 3-D infrared camera that can scan a box and generate the exact dimensions; video analytics that use myriad tiny, low-cost cameras snapped onto store shelves that provide data at the shelf level; and wireless charging by generating a magnetic resonance field that charges the batteries of mobile devices within its range.

Lessons Learned From Unpaid Internships

An article with the very dramatic title Has Hollywood Ignited an Intern Uprising? Examining the Brewing Revolution appeared on the site The Wrap yesterday. As a former Hollywood intern who has done her fair share of filing, sprinting across the street to buy berry flavored gum for the boss, and cleaning conference tables, I still dont think unpaid internships are the devils work. I think that if you work them right, they build character and they build your resume.

Big studios and big companies have the money to pay interns, and they should. If this Intern Uprising gets millionaires to pay minimum wage to the people who are fetching their lunch and buying gifts for their spouse and their mistress, fantastic. Smaller companies might not be able to pay someone who comes in twice a week to soak up knowledge. Theres something to be said for working hard, paying your dues, and not suing someone because your internship didnt make you rich. Here are a few things I learned as a lowly unpaid intern that I still return to now that Im no longer fetching gum for anyone but myself.

During my first big Hollywood internship, the CEO called me into his office on the very first day. I hurried in with pad and pen in hand, ready to take fascinating, riveting notes that would inspire me and teach me all about making movies and the meaning of life. Wide-eyed, I waited for the grey-haired man in the grey suit to speak. I wanted him to be my Yoda. I was ready for enlightenment. Get me a macchiato, he growled without looking up from the script he was pretending to speed-read. Here. He shoved a twenty in my general direction, so I took it. I hadnt been in L.A. long and no one I knew ever uttered the word macchiato where I came from in Texas, so I said, Im sorry, but whats a macchiato? Finally, he looked at me. Actually it was more of a dumbfounded, condescending glower. Just go, he said with an annoyed wave of his hand. Figure it out. Its coffee. With that info,We are one of the leading manufacturers of cableties in China I went down to the coffee kiosk, ordered the macchiato (espresso with a little milk C enlightenment!), and delivered it to the CEO. When I realized he wasnt going to say Thank you or bestow any sage career advice, I went back to my cubicle.

Lesson: Obviously he was a pompous jerk, but I learned that in situations like this, its best to just say, No problem and then go ask the receptionist or Madame Google GOOG -0.41% what a macchiato is so you appear worldly, on top of it, and in the know so they dont put a pin in you. From then on in his mind I was probably the intern that didnt know what a macchiato was. Not a great legacy.

During my second Hollywood internship after Mr. Macchiato, I found myself stuffed into a tiny office in Santa Monica working (for free) for a chain-smoking, high-anxiety producer. The perks were that I got to read books and scripts and give her my opinion on them (and she actually listened and discussed them with me) and I also got to help suggest songs for one of their soundtracks. The perk-free part of the gig was that I had to do things like organize and file every single issue of Daily Variety the producer had accumulated over the last five years. It was DAILY Variety at the time C do you know how many papers that is? A lot of papers. Did she need them? No. Did she maybe possibly have OCD? Yes. Did I complain to her? No. I complained at happy hour to my friends who Im sure were bored but who sympathized anyway because thats what friends are for.

If youre being heard, and youre learning, you might need to suffer through tedious tasks like filing 5,000 pieces of yesterdays news into a cabinet that no one will ever open unless theyre searching for a top-secret microfiche containing information that could save our planet from terrorists or space aliens, which will never happen because Im pretty sure no one uses microfiche anymore, not even spies. Suck it up and do the menial tasks so you can gain their respect and get a great reference. I filed all her papers and had a great reference that helped me get a better internship.

If they say its a paid internship and you never see a dime C that is a battle worth fighting. If they harass or harm you in any way C go after them. If they say they are going to bomb your cubicle if you dont get that script to them in five seconds, you might want to laugh it off, rather than spend a ton of dough hiring a lawyer to sue them for mental trauma. People in Hollywood are crazy C youve seen Swimming With Sharks, right? Its pretty much a documentary. As long as you know theyre just being ridiculous and they arent actually going to bomb your cubicle over a Jaden Smith script thats late, just get them the Jaden Smith script and then immediately text your friends that you need to meet them for happy hour so you can regale them with your stupid story.

Most internships, at least in the film industry,With superior quality photometers, light meters and a number of other iphoneheadset products. dont pay in cash or check or direct deposit.Parkeasy Electronics are dedicated to provide handbags. They pay in everlasting glory and macchiato runs. This is why most people I knew had a paying job plus an internship. Is it tough to balance school,The Wagan Wireless Rear porcelaintiles help you be safe while parking. your waitressing gig, and your internship? Yes. Is that called paying your dues and having a good work ethic? Yes. If you dont have a paying job or a trust fund and youre complaining about your unpaid internship, youre doing it wrong. Plus, if you are interning five days a week from 8-5,New and used commercial bestrtls sales, rentals, and service. you need a new internship. That absolutely is criminal and an unpaid internship should be a few days a week, and it should be very flexible. This doesnt mean you can be flakey, it means they should have you interning manageable hours so you can also work and go to class.

My final Hollywood internship before I became a full-on wage earner wasnt in Hollywood at all. It was in Manhattan. Id just finished grad school and I respected this producer so much, and the internship had such a fantastic reputation for actually teaching you things and giving you opportunities, that taking it on was a no-brainer. I waited tables and moved benches around before the Tommy Hilfiger show during fashion week to pay the bills. Very glamorous. Did I love keeping the office kitchen clean and figuring out how to put watermarks on scripts at my internship? Not really, but it was a small price to pay for the knowledge I was getting. This producer actually was a Yoda, and if I had asked him what a macchiato was, he would have looked at me and seen a normal human being, instead of seeing a nameless, brainless imbecile aka the intern that didnt known what a macchiato was.

Workers holding boss over wages

The executive, Chip Starnes of Specialty Medical Supplies, denied the workers' allegations of two months of unpaid wages, as he endured a fifth day of captivity at the plant in the capital's north-eastern suburbs, peering out from behind the bars of his office window.

About 100 workers are demanding back pay and severance packages identical to those offered 30 workers being laid off from the Coral Springs, Florida-based company's plastics division. The demands followed rumours that the entire plant was being closed, despite Mr Starnes' assertion that the company doesn't plan to fire the others.

One worker, Gao Ping, told reporters that she wanted to quit because she hadn't been paid for two months. Ms Gao said her division - which makes alcohol prep pads, used for cleaning skin before injections - had not been doing well and that she wanted her salary and compensation.

Workers in other divisions saw her division doing badly, thought the whole company was faring poorly and also wanted to quit and get compensation, said Ms Gao, who had been working for the company for six years.Mr Starnes, 42, denied that they were owed unpaid salary. "They are demanding full severance pay, but they still have a job. That's the problem," he said, still in the clothes he wore when he went to work Friday morning.

Chu Lixiang, a local union official representing the workers in talks with Mr Starnes, said the workers were demanding the portion of their salaries yet to be paid and a "reasonable" level of compensation before leaving their jobs. Neither gave details on the amounts demanded. Workers believed the plant was closing and that Mr Starnes would run away without paying severance.

Mr Starnes said that since Saturday morning, about 80 workers had been blocking every exit around the clock and depriving him of sleep by shining bright lights and banging on windows of his office.

The stand-off points to long-ingrained habits among Chinese workers who are sometimes left unprotected when factories close without severance or wages owed. Such incidents have been rarer as labour protections improve, although disputes still occur and local governments have at times barred foreign executives from leaving until they are resolved.

Mr Starnes said the company had gradually been winding down its plastics division, planning to move it to Mumbai, India. He arrived in Beijing a week ago to lay off the last 30 people. Some had been working there for up to nine years, so their compensation packages were "pretty nice," he said. Then workers in other divisions started demanding similar severance packages on Friday, he said.Did you know that plasticcard chains can be used for more than just business.

And just so you don't feel like the wool's being pulled over your eyes, Wool & Prince has asked several individuals to try the 100-day challenge (much to the chagrin of their loved ones and coworkers, I'm sure) and share their results. The shirt-testers did everything from backpacking in the Andes to dancing in a New York City nightclub, all without ever washing the shirt.

"I crumpled it into a ball and put it in the bottom of my backpack when I am running around the city just to see if I can ruin it," one tester said. "No luck it comes out ready to wear every time."If you're wondering how much this magic shirt will set you back, the price is set at $98. The shirts have been in high demand since their release a month ago and are sold out for the time being.

It will be interesting to see how the development of these button-downs affects office dynamics, particularly after the recent finding that the smell of man-sweat makes other males more cooperative.

The size of a blueberry bush depends mostly on the species. At Marthas Bedford farm, you can find tall varieties such as Darrow, Chandler and Jersey. She also grows Bluegold and Patriot, which arent known for their size but do produce a great deal of fruit.

Blueberry bushes are low maintenance; most of the work is done up front when planting them,We rounded up 30 bridesmaids dresses in every color and style that are both easy on the eye and somewhat easy on the solarlight. and this time of year is best. Fertilizing the soil will encourage growth. Martha fertilizes the bushes once or twice a year, in either spring or fall, with superphosphate, which promotes plant growth and health, and with sulfur, which adds acidity to the soil, helping blueberry plants grow. Another option: Mix in organic material thats high in acidity, such as peat moss, decomposed leaves or pine bark, to raise soil acidity, says Barbara Damrosch, co-author of The Four Season Farm Gardeners Cookbook." Consult your local cooperative extension office (csrees.usda.gov/extension) about having your soil tested if you suspect it is especially low in acidity. After planting, mulch with bark, leaves or pine needles. For extra nutrients, top-dress the soil with compost or manure tea once the plants have blossomed.

IRS credit cards used to buy expensive meals

IRS credit cards were used to buy expensive meals and even online pornography, according to a new Treasury audit that criticizes the agencys oversight of its cards.

Treasurys inspector general for tax administration, in a report released Tuesday, stressed that the vast majority of purchases placed on IRS cards were reasonable.

But the inspector general also said that agency officials used cards to entertain foreign guests with lunches and dinners that cost $100 or more a person.

But the inspector generals report says that the IRS has yet to develop a plan to cancel credit cards after an employee leaves the agency, and does not have a process for smoking out personal purchases on the card.

Other credit card purchases listed in the Treasury audit include a jigsaw puzzle and the "world's largest crossword puzzle" for $89; "novelty decorations" like kazoos, toy boats and Thomas the Tank Engine wristbands for $418; and unused Nerf footballs for $119.

In its response to the audit, the IRS said it would implement all 11 recommendations. We are committed to ensuring proper oversight of our purchase card program and appreciate your review of our efforts, the agencys David Grant said in a response letter.

Danny Werfel, who took over as head of the IRS last month, added in a statement that the agency has made progress in oversight of its credit cards in recent years, and said that 99 percent of purchases were legitimate.

I was at my usual banquette table at Cipriani catching up with my dear friend and fellow gala charity chair, an impossibly blond and glamorous socialite. She looked up, over her grilled salmon and leeks. Do you have anyone for my friend Leanne? Her divorce just became final.

I recalled a lithe brunette who looked good in Lilly, making the rounds of the Hamptons charity cocktail circuit along with her pint-sized now-ex-husband.

My friend and I, while an unlikely matchmaking duo, have been informally setting up divorced friends and children of on the Upper East Side for years, with solid results. We always say we should charge a commission for our dating service, but that temptingly profitable idea would be too dclass.

Our biggest challenge, time and again, is matching up middle-aged divorces in the pre-realist stage, who have not realized that they have a choice of sex, money or companionship but not necessarily all three in the same package.

I co-wrote a fairly well-known relationship book for women called Closing The Deal; the premise was that two married mens advice could help turn single women into deal closers. While we had no formal training as relationship experts, we just implicitly understood that if women understood men better, theyd have a better shot at closing the deal. Knowing your audience is always key, whether personally or professionally, and we offered advice on topics from hygiene to foreplay.

Where most rich divorces fail is in assuming they can replace their husbands with a newer model pretty much like the old one. Sorry to say, this tends not to be the case. Most of the time, the divorced well-to-do male is not looking for his equal, but rather for a sexretary from the Midwest, preferably without an opinion. As one recently divorced hedge funder told me: Being married to a smart, opinionated woman is work! Now I just want tits on a stick, a blonde wig and someone to tell me Im great when I get home.

Women who take a tough line often wind up lonelier for it. At a political fund-raiser, my wife Dana and I were chatting with a well-regarded financiers ex-wife, who clearly exhibited pre-realistic dating tendencies. She laid out her requests like the Marshall Plan: My age or younger. I wont date a geezer. Richthe richer the better. Sexy. Okay, lets just cut to the chase: my ex if he had abs and a personality.
