Six honored for role in river rescue

A father-son rafting outing turned dangerous as churning waters at a dam on the Vermilion River trapped James Elenz and his 10-year-old son, Ryan. They struggled for 40 minutes at Buzzi Unicem Dam near Oglesby. But with no evident means of escape and strength waning, Ryan prepared for the worst.

"I'm sorry we had to die this way, Dad," Ryan told his father during the June 28 scare. But at that bleakest moment help was about to arrive.A successful, if complicated rescue ensued involving four Schaumburg youths and two kayaking off-duty Aurora police sergeants.

All six were saluted by the Illinois Conservation Police with certificates and praise for initiative and bravery during an outdoor ceremony held last week at the Aurora Police Department.Elenz, a captain with the Niles Police Department, was traveling with his son on the Vermillion River when they became trapped at a lowhead dam where water has a deceptively easy flow over the low concrete barrier.

They tried to negotiate a canoe chute on the right side of the waterway but the strong current forced them toward the middle."We were stuck, and that dam was trying very hard to pull us under," Elenz said. "The power of that dam was absolutely unbelievable."I told me son 'We're not going to die, someone has got to come down this river eventually' and these four young men did."

When the youths from Schaumburg 11-year-old Graham Fath and 14-year-olds Colin Fath, Matt Grammas and Tyler Fredrickson saw the situation they promptly went to the aid of the father and son."We saw two heads bobbing up and down," Colin Fath said. "At first it looked like two people swimming in the river, they were waving their hands so I thought they were having fun. As we got closer, they were screaming 'help.'"

The youths maneuvered toward the Elenz craft, pulled Ryan onto their raft, and his father was then able to reach shore and call 911.The raft, now with five youths aboard, in turn became ensnared. But they weren't stuck for long. That's when Aurora Sergeants Dan Eppard and Rick Ahlgren arrived in their kayaks.

The police officers beached their crafts, thew a rope to the youths, then pulled them to shore and safety. Ryan Elenz was treated at the scene for hypothermia, while others were unharmed. The Schaumburg youths as well as Eppard and Ahlgren then resumed their tripsThe Vermillion River flows nearly 75 miles north from central Illinois and empties into the Illinois River near Oglesby, in LaSalle County.

The rescue was the second in the same location for Eppard. He was traveling there in 2009 when he rescued one of two women he found trapped at the dam. He located an inner tube on shore and threw it to one of the women, who grabbed on and escaped.Another bystander tossed a life-preserver to the other female but she was already unconscious and later died.

That portion of the Vermillion River was closed in 2009 after two drowning deaths. It was reopened in 2010.While the latest incident had a happy ending, conservation police said it still points out the need for safety on any waterway."Dams still serve a purpose in the state of Illinois," said Rafael Gutierrez, Conservation Police acting deputy chief. "Some help generate electricity, some serve as means to create recreation, some are simply pleasing to the eye.
