Network Rail has introduced speed reductions to train services due to high temperatures causing overhead wires to overheat and sag. Trains on the London to Norwich Great Eastern line, which is operated by National Express East Anglia, had to reduce their speeds from 90mph to 80mph and then later to only 60mph. The restrictions are in place during the hottest part of the day, so morning and evening services aren't affected.
A spokesperson for the rail company said that it's currently investing over 200 million into replacing overhead wires between London, Chelmsford and Southend. The system was installed 6-7 decades ago, and it's likely to expand in extremely hot weather, causing the lines to sag. This will increase the risk of damage to overhead power equipment if trains are operated at full speed.
