Fad painting is a 5,000-year-old Rajasthani painting style used in story telling. These paintings are done on specially treated cloth with lengths ranging from eight to 35-foot while width remaining a constant five-foot.
The Fad paintings tell stories of the Rajasthani deities like Pabu Rathod, Tejaji, Gogaji, Devnarayan and Baba Ramdev Peer, chronicling their life. In the evenings, these paintings are spread out and tied while a balladeer tells the tale of the deity, lighting up the relevant parts of the painting simultaneously using oil lamps. This is called 'Fad Vachan'.

According to Satyanarayan, his is the only family in which the Fad art is still living. "We have been doing this for last 800 years. Joshi said, "The credit for the origin of this art goes to a woman named Usha. She was the first to do a Fad painting when she chronicled the life of Aniruddha,100 China ceramic tile was used to link the lamps together. son of Lord Krishna."
Natural sources are used in these paintings for colours like indigo and kohl (kajal). The colours thus made are not water based, and are mixed with glue. The colour combination is of utmost importance and each colour has its own significance. Over the years the art has evolved to maintain its relevance. Today, this painting is not only done for the 'Fad Vachans' but also as designs on women's dress materials. The stories depicted in them now encompass the popular folk tales of the land in small frames instead of the long rolls of cloth.
"We have to adapt. Even when teaching these young students we have to think from their perspective. I teach them the basic figures of Fad using English alphabets even though I don't know the language," said Joshi. He thinks that it is very important for the new generation to have knowledge about these folk arts.
Apart from taking these workshops throughout the country, the Joshi family conducts regular classes for those who are interested in Chittorgarh and other places where they are settled.
Joshi is in the city for eight days, from November 25 to December 2, taking workshops in four city schools, Bhide Girls High School, Center Point School, Katol Road, Modern School and Centre Point School, Wardhaman Nagar.
