Scituate teacher expresses frustration at state of Gates building

The abundance of building problems lingering throughout the Gates Intermediate School found their way before the school committee once again at Monday night’s meeting, Nov. 7.

In response to school committee Chairman Michael Hayes review of the cost and estimated scope of work for the Scituate High auditorium project, Shan Morrissey, a special education teacher at Gates, said she and other teachers were frustrated at the committee’s decision to renovate the auditorium.

“You can replace curtains, the Genie, the sound (in the auditorium), but that is still $71,000 for chairs…I didn’t give two furlough days to donate chairs to the auditorium. I can tell you the staff is feeling very demoralized.”

Morrissey said the issues facing the Gates structure should have come before renovating the auditorium.

Morrissey said her classroom is 82 degrees and the heater makes a high-pitched noise all day, necessitating some of her students to wear headphones while in the classroom. Currently, the town has a bid out to conduct a feasibility study at Gates with $60,000, which was allocated at Town Meeting in April 2011, said Donlan. The deadline for these bids is Nov. 17 and a final bid to conduct the study should be awarded by the end of November. Donlan said the study would determine if Gates could continue to serve as a middle school for the town.
