To see a fish out of water, you don't always have to go to the closest riverbank.
All you have to do is accompany me the next time I venture into that bastion of femininity known as the beauty shop — or in this case, the recently expanded Hair Hut & Day Spa at 2084 College Ave. in Elmira Heights.
The Don Juan in me looked forward to spending time in a place filled with ladies working hard to make other ladies more attractive.
But when it came to having business owner Rosa Giammichele and her cosmetologists show all the cool new stuff that's been added to the salon since it moved to the new location, I soon realized I was out of my element.
For the past 27 years, The Hair Hut did business out of Coal Yard Plaza, directly across from Thomas Edison High School on College Avenue in Elmira Heights.
During that time, Giammichele ran the salon out of a 1,300-square-foot store front, employed eight and offered such beauty treatments as manicures,Read Wholesale Tile decoration For Bathrooms and burn fat away pedicures, tanning beds, spray-on tanning and hair styling — simple things a guy like me can understand.

And with an eye on eventually relocating the hair salon to the larger building, Giammichele and her husband, Ray, bought it.
What happened during the months following the purchase were things a guy like me can understand.
Ray Giammichele, friends and family members went to work renovating the building inside and out.
They hammered and they nailed. They installed walls, doors, ceramic tiles, new carpeting and paint, jack-hammered out a concrete loading dock and laid new blacktop on the parking lot.
About four weeks ago, the Hair Hut moved into the new building and hired four employees — a nail technician, a stylist and two masseuses.

The salon's new floor plan incorporates two areas where the stylists do hair. At the old place, there was only one.
But imagine my surprise when in addition to having their hair styled, I learned some younger women like brightly colored feathers or "bling stands" woven into their new hairdos.
Giammichele also added two nail stations. The service was available at the salon. Imagine the sensation of getting your feet and back rubbed at the same time!
There was also a time when those having hair shampooed or rinsed had to sit and lean backward into a specially designed sink.
Now there's something called a European sink. You still have to sit to use it, but the rinse sinks now tilts forward while the seats tilt backward.
The advantage, I'm told, is that the stylists can work from the client's back and side.
The new Hair Hut also has an area where facials are given. This service, involving creams and astringents, also was added after the move.
In my neck of the woods, a "facial" happens during a basketball game, when a player who is being closely guarded by his opponent takes a difficult jump shot and says "In your face!" when the shot goes in the basket.
And strange as it may seem, I didn't know what a body wrap was.
In my mind's eye, I envisioned something from ancient Egypt. However, at the Hair Hut & Day Spa, the person being wrapped is still alive. The bandages are infused with oils, creams or muds that rejuvenate, rather than mummify, the skin.
As informative as my visit to the new Hair Hut was, I was left with one unanswered question.
