Thousands pack commemorate 1963 march

Fifty years to the day after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a large crowd streamed onto the National Mall and listened as civil rights leaders urged them - sometimes defiantly - to keep fighting for equal rights and justice. 

Civil rights leader and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young urged thousands who had returned to the spot to "Pray on, stay on and fight on." 

Through on-and-off rain showers that were occasionally heavy, marchers making their way to the Mall waved banners that read, "The new Jim Crow must go" and "50 years later still fighting to vote," sang traditional protest songs and chanted, "Education is our right - education is our fight!" 

The 1963 march focused on what Young called "the triple evils of racism, war and poverty," but he said King's speech focused mostly on poverty. "He said that the Constitution was a promissory note to which all of us would fall heir, but that when men and women of color presented their check at the Bank of Justice, it came back marked 'insufficient funds.' " 

"Fifty years later," Young concluded, "we're still here trying to cash that bad check. Wednesday's march started about 9:10 a.m.Banners and T-shirts and chants focused on the Trayvon Martin verdict and on protecting the Voting Rights Act. Marchers of all ages and races walked the route together, some singing songs such as "We Shall Not Be Moved."

Robin McNair, a teacher at Dupont Park Adventist School in D.C., says she and fellow teachers brought 50 students to the march. "We want them to experience history and be a part of it. Fifty years from now, they will be able to look back and remember this day and say they were there." 

Alonza Lawrence, 57, a pastor at the Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., said he drove to Washington Wednesday morning with his sister, Roberta Walker, from Richmond. "I was 7 at the time of the original march. I wanted to be part of the celebration this time. There are so many issues to protest: voting rights, racism, ageism, sexism - many of the 'isms.' The goal of this country is to become a place where all people are treated equally and have a fair chance. Even so, Elie said, Farmer's arrest was part of CORE's strategy, meant not only to highlight how different CORE was from its enemies, but also how different CORE was from its allies. 

But sacrificing oneself and one's own personal freedom for the larger good was CORE's modus operandi. Farmer says in his jailhouse letter that he couldn't walk around free while others who had protested in Plaquemine were confined. 

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was a gathering of hundreds of thousands of individuals, but more significantly, the march was a gathering of six important civil rights groups, three predominantly white religious organizations and organized labor. The civil rights groups had similar goals but different methods and often attracted different pools of people for its members. 

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation's premier civil rights organization, was arguably the most conservative, eschewing direct confrontation in favor of dispassionate courtroom battles. The National Urban League was similar in style with a greater emphasis on increasing black employment. The Negro American Labor Council shared the emphasis on employment. Its leader, A. Philip Randolph - who put together the 1963 event with deputy director Bayard Rustin - had been wanting to march on Washington for more than twenty years. But the 1941 march Randolph planned to press for anti-lynching legislation and desegregation of the military never got off the ground.

Graduate Jewellery Exhibition Kilkenny

Ireland is a place where there is an abundance of unique creative talent. The wealth of creative talent is currently on display at the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny. From Saturday, 13th July 2013 the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny will exhibit work by the twelve talented 2013 graduates of the internationally renowned Jewellery and Goldsmithing Skills and Design Course run by the Crafts Council of Ireland. 

The exhibition will be officially opened on Friday 19th July by Dr. Alison Fitzgerald, a lecturer in the history department at the National University of Ireland Maynooth and an expert in jewellery and silversmithing and allied trades in Ireland. The course has a 90 percent employment rate. They include a former project manager, fashion design graduate, plumber, software developer and architecture graduate. 

Eimear Conyard, course manager and tutor, said the course challenged the students but their steadfast commitment, passion and creativity has resulted in an exhibition of exceptional work. The complexity of the pieces on display demonstrates an ability to create work that pushes the boundaries of jewellery design. The final project work in the exhibition reflects each graduates signature style and their individual technical ability. Adding to this, Karen Hennessy, chief executive of the Crafts Council of Ireland said the courses previous record of 90% employment is testament to the relevance of the two-year programme. Before they ever said "I do," they wrote a contract with "the intention that they'd have an open relationship once they were married." 

Zupcofska says he has never drawn up such a clause for a heterosexual couple nor, fascinatingly, for a lesbian couple. A study out of UCLA found that two-thirds of formally legalized same-sex couples are made up of women; yet, nearly all the studies about sex and monogamy in same-sex couples focus exclusively on men. 

Gay-rights groups are often nervous about sociologists or reporters looking too closely at what really happens in the bedrooms of gay relationships, out of fear that anti-gay activists will bludgeon them with a charge of sexual promiscuity, as a reason to deny them equal rights. But now that gays and lesbians are on the cusp of having access to marriage equality, will the conversation about monogamy change within queer culture? And would straight support have helped gays get the marriage rights they now have if the truly complex nature of sexual boundaries for gay couples were more openly talked about? 

On the eve of this new era, I talked to a number of married gays and lesbians about these sometimes uncomfortable questions: a former Catholic priest from Connecticut who married his partner of three decades; a gay marriage and divorce attorney from Massachusetts; a highly religious, sexually monogamous couple in their thirties; two dads of infant children who are in a sexually open relationship; and a leading lesbian marriage equality advocate.

Cacophony is one of the standard tropes by which we view Los Angeles, a city defined by its unknowability. But if that's part of the personality of the place, what I have in mind is something more specific, something about the fire this time. It's the difference between the 1992 riots and the Watts riots, which George referred to as "bold-faced, italicized," when I asked her recently for her thoughts.
