I colored in all the black-and-white illustrations in my schoolbooks and made my own drawings too. In secondary school we did have art teachers and I got my first knowledge of the Western approach to painting there. 

In 1949, El-Salahi went to the School of Design at Gordon Memorial College, which he later returned to as a teacher. While in 1954, he received a government scholarship to go to London Universitys Slade School of Art. He majored in painting and did calligraphy as a subsidiary subject. Later he studied black and white photography at Columbia University, New York, a foundation for nearly two decades of pen and ink work with shades of grey in-between. 

While in London El-Salahi delved into the British Museums archive of antique Arab calligraphic manuscripts. I spent a lot of time there, studying the origin of the written letters, their structure and meaning. I even studied ancient hieroglyphics, he told Asharq Al-Awsat. 

But a period of questioning had started. At that time in Western art schools there was an insistence on realist art to which El-Salahi had to conform. On the one hand, I wanted to learn European techniques, about the Renaissance and so on. The shock was a revelationI was astounded to find that the artistic tastes entrenched in the Sudanese personality offered no possibility of appreciating the expertise I had acquired abroad. I had to examine the Sudanese environment, assess its potential as an artistic resource, he said. 

At this time, El-Salahi also experienced an identity conflict. In the Sudan we have this duality in our nature, because our fathers came from Arabia, long ago, but our mothers are African. Perhaps as an antidote to questions of cultural and ethnic characteristics, he says: I find myself much more Muslim than Arab, because the Arab thing can have all kinds of racial overtones: it is from Islam that I get my values. Your values make you a better person and they help you create a better society. 

El-Salahi stopped painting for two years and traveled all over the Sudan, including into the desert to meditate. I needed peace of mind, to see with the inner eye. I was often quite ill in those days. I decided I would try to cure myself just by looking inside, which I did, by sitting there very quietly, he told Asharq Al-Awsat. 

While travelling, El-Salahi began to see aesthetic alternatives always available to Sudanese artists, particularly the craftspeople who were preserving their peoples legacy. 

I could see this mainly in decorated goods made of leather, wood and palm leaves, as well as in tattoos on the skin. What captivated me most, though, were the khalwa practices of drawing on tablets of acacia wood, carved as an abstract representation of the human body. 

As a child, he had been taught this skill, going on to beautify the tablets using designs called sharafa that resemble the chapter openings in the Quran. For most students, she notes, tuition and fees are not the largest part of college expenses. At the University of Oregon, for instance, tuition and fees run about $9,800 per year, while room and board costs more than $10,New and used commercial plasticmoulds sales, rentals, and service.000 and books and other expenses another $3000-plus. Many students, she writes, would still wind up having to borrow to cover costs without having to work while in school unless they receive federal Pell Grants or Oregon maintains its Opportunity Grant program for lower-income students.

Alloy and Rackham agree that that maintaining some level of need-based aid for the lowest-income students is important in addition to this plan. Weve been working closely with advocates, including the state treasurer, to implement this in a way that would be complementary to need-based aid, to open doors to students in the most accessible way possible, Alloy says. We dont want students who would otherwise get their education for free to be accountable to pay into a fund for 24 years. 

A less-discussed aspect of Pay It Forward is that it would take the profit motive out of state-level student lending. Instead of private lenders (or the federal government, which pays private lenders to administer its direct loans) making money off of the often-steep interest on student loans, students would pay their money directly back to the state, in a process more akin to paying taxes than paying back a loan. Pay It Forward would thus remove the fat interest payments for private lenders and perhaps most importantly, put that money back into the hands of the state to reinvest in the university system. 

We see this as an issue [of] how we prioritize investing in our future, Alloy says. Are we funneling money out of the local economy straight to the financial sector or are we putting it into students? 

The current debate on the federal level, she notes, has been limited to renegotiating interest rates or allowing income-based repayment, at least since the Obama administrations 2010 move to end direct subsidies to private lenders by moving from the Federal Family Education Loan Program to direct lending. But big lenders like Sallie Mae continue to benefit in either of those cases, Alloy notes. This is an admirable political mobilization around this issue, but the plan is very porous in its current state, says Cottom. There are a lot of holes, and we should be really explicit about what those are. Whenever you have implicit assumptions, thats where inequality tends to manifest itself. 

Students who expect to make a lot of money after college or whose families already have enough to pay for school up-front may see Pay It Forward as yet another incentive to go to a private university or leave the state entirely. Higher-income students are never shopping for colleges locally. For them, the college shopping process is a national process, so a state-based focus doesnt address them at all, Cottom says. The students who stay in state are the ones who are less likely to see exponential returns from their college degree, she points out. Knowing what we know about their likelihood of social mobility, I dont know how taxing those students on their income is sustainable. If you dont have wealthy people paying into the system I dont know how it works. 

Those from lower-income families or those who look at the bleak job market and see little to inspire them may still not want to pay 3 percent of their income in an economy where low-wage service jobs are the fastest-growing fields. They may still see the cost of college as too high.

Active shooter training

Shots rang out in the parking lot of Unicoi County High School on Wednesday morning. As several of their classmates in the parking lot fell wounded, two students ran screaming toward the school. Trailing not far behind was a pair of armed men, intent on entering the occupied high school. But this nightmare scenario was not real. Instead, it was the culmination of active shooter response training that local law enforcement officials have been taking part in all week. 

With the start of the 2013-14 Unicoi County school year a little more than a week away, officials with the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department, Erwin Police Department, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Tennessee Highway Patrol, the local Emergency Management Agency, Unicoi County Schools system and local fire and emergency medical services took to the grounds of the high school to put several days of active shooter training into action. The students were portrayed by students in the Unicoi County High School Drama Club. 

The training was conducted by the Piney Flats-based Shooters Edge. Shooters Edge General Manager Don Reimer said Wednesdays mass casualty exercise was conducted to simulate two active shooters attempting the infiltrate the high school. Two run-throughs of the exercise were conducted Wednesday morning. 

Reimer said the first run-through went too well, as the student resource officer stationed at the high school was able to take out both of the armed individuals as they approached the building. The first one, the SRO did such a fantastic job that he actually took out both of the bad guys, Reimer said. But the exercise would have been over in 10 seconds, and thats not really how its probably going to happen. 

During the second run-through, the SRO was able to wound one of the gunmen before being wounded himself. The second assailant was able to enter the school. As officers quickly responded to take control of the situation, a group of around 15 screaming students fled from the building. Reimer said Wednesdays exercise, which was organized to simulate an actual active shooter situation as closely as possible, will serve as a measuring stick to determine what areas, such as response time and planning, local officials may or may not need to improve upon. 

What you had is, basically, us trying to enact a real-world situation, Reimer said. These guys came in, they did their thing, then they breached the door and they went in. If you remember Sandy Hook, he breached the door and he went in and, by the time law enforcement arrived, all the damage was done. 

Reimer said he was impressed by not only the responses of the SRO and other officers, but also by the cooperation among the agencies that took part in the training and exercise. Unicoi County Director of Schools Denise Brown said this was the first time local officials had conducted such an exercise, adding that the training was necessary to prepare for disaster. 

Im very proud of how the sheriffs department, Erwin Police and our SROs did today, Brown said. I dont think youre ever 100 percent prepared, but I think the more that you can practice, the more that you make sure your plans and the people you work closely with the sheriffs department, the town of Erwin and MedicOne youve got to make sure everybody knows your plans and youre on the same page.

Theres no way you simulate every scenario that could happen, but thats just like police training itself, Hensley said. It gives us an idea of which direction to go. A trained, full-time officer was placed in each Unicoi County school after students returned from the 2012 Christmas Break. Hensley spearheaded this effort and worked with local school and police officials to ensure a countywide SRO program came to fruition in response to the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. Although the county and town of Erwin are still going through their respective budgetary processes for the 2013-14 fiscal year, Hensley said he expects the SRO program to continue in the 2013-14 school year.

Most recently, the ministry announced that last week, the fuel from the gas station in the Naura community in the countrys North had 618 parts per million of sulfur in its diesel fuel, when the permissible amount is only 10 p.p.m.The offending gas stations will be allowed to resume regular service only once the new inventory is in place and verified by its inspectors, the ministry said. 

Also last week, the ministry identified four other fueling stations that have been infusing extra sulfur into their diesel supplies. The Benzol station at the Tira junction was selling fuel with 521 p.p.m. of sulfur, while Diesel Line on Hamusahim Street in Jerusalem was selling fuel with 117 p.p.m. The Dor Alon station in Rishon Lezion was selling diesel fuel containing 583 p.p.m, and the Dor Alon station in the Galilee community of Arrabe was selling fuel with 790 p.p.m, the ministry said. 

Five other stations that have yet to correct their defects have tested for impermissibly high levels of sulfur this year, with one station having been identified each month from January through May, according to the ministry data. The five stations are Dizol Gal in Ibillin, Paz in Rahat, the facility at the entrance to Moshav Shibolim, Dor Alon in Kiryat Ata and Dor Alon in Shuafat. 

The ministry inspectors also discovered in January that the Sonol gas station at the Hasharon junction has been significantly watering down its benzene 95-octane gas sold to drivers. Regulations dictate that benzene must be clear and clean, without any visibly freeflowing water in the gas mix. 

The Energy and Water Ministry emphasized that the supervision and safety division of its Fuel and Gas Administration, in conjunction with laboratories approved by the fuel commissioner, have installed samplers at gas stations across the country and test the products regularly.

A member of the hacker group Anonymous who considers himself an "electronic Robin Hood" pleaded guilty Tuesday to hacking a private intelligence firm and several websites, stealing e-mails and credit card data belonging to nearly 1 million people.

Hammond -- who went by the online nicknames "Anarchaos" and "sup_g" -- was arrested last year after he confided online with Hector Xavier Monsegur, a hacker know as "Sabu" who was working as an FBI informant at the time. 

On Tuesday, Hammond said he pleaded guilty because prosecutors said he would face charges in several jurisdictions and so "the process might have repeated indefinitely." He said his plea agreement "frees me to tell the world what I did and why." 

Before his arrest last year, Hammond, of Chicago, served two years in prison for hacking a conservative political group's server and stealing 5,000 credit card numbers. 

He has spent 15 months in prison on the Stratfor charges. During that time, he claims he has been held in solitary confinement and denied visits and phone calls with family and friends. 

In response to Hammond's guilty plea, a Twitter account belonging to Anonymous wrote on Tuesday that "Hammond couldn't stand to live in a country that served companies who profited off of spying on the citizenry."
