Combat engineers tear down patrol bases throughout Helmand province

Firebase Saenz has been destroyed. Its defenses have been torn down and its walls have been completely leveled. This destruction was not caused by insurgents – it was the handiwork of Marines from the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward).

With the recent reduction and reorganization of troops, Saenz is the first of several forward operating bases being demilitarized in Helmand province.

The firebase, which covered a little over 11 acres of Afghan desert, was built more than a year ago and named after Sgt. Jose Saenz III who was killed in action, Aug. 9, 2010. During its existence, Saenz housed Marine artillery units armed with M777 Lightweight Howitzer cannons that provided indirect fire support for coalition ground forces operating in the northern half of Helmand province.

After convoying north from Camp Leatherneck, the Marines of 9th ESB worked diligently from Dec. 13-15 to properly dismantle the base and ensure that there was little, if any, footprint from the Marines.

“Even though it can be difficult [demilitarizing the base], you kind of just want to wreck the place, you know, have some fun with it,” said 1st Lt. Andrew Fassett, commander of 1st Platoon, Alpha Company, 9th ESB, and a native of Princetown, N.Y. “But [the Marines] have been doing a good job taking everything down and making sure to keep it neat so it fits on the truck. We did the right job in terms of cleaning up after ourselves here in Afghanistan.”

Doing the right job included emptying sandbags, pushing down berms and coiling up hundreds of yards of razor-sharp concertina wire surrounding Saenz.

One of the more challenging tasks was dismantling the numerous HESCO barriers that made up the guard posts at each corner of the base. HESCO barriers (named after the British company HESCO Bastion) are military fortifications that have seen extensive use in both Iraq and Afghanistan. A typical HESCO is 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide and is made of a collapsible wire mesh container with a heavy-duty fabric liner that is usually filled with sand.

Princeton Museum makes history

Highly anticipated and long awaited, the Princeton Museum reopening arrived with the appropriate amount of hoopla one would expect. For the past few months, behind closed doors, the interior of the old museum has been deluged in a major renovation. Working feverishly on a small budget, the able-bodied crew of contractors and volunteers pulled off an incredible feat of ingenuity. Last week was show time for the Museum Board and all the many hands on workers who went way above and beyond to give Princetonites another fantastic reason to be proud of their town.

MLA Harry Lali, Mayor Randy McLean, Regional Director Brad Hope, members of Town Council, Sergeant Dave Clare of the Princeton RCMP, the museum board, and Justice of the Peace Eric Goodfellow all stood proudly before this latest accomplishment last Wednesday evening in front of donators and volunteers who were given a sneak peak. "This is a proud moment for our town," stated Mayor McLean. "It is the volunteers who make things happen in our community. If you think you can't get top quality work in town you just need to take a look around our museum. I am truly impressed and I know you will be too."

Princeton and District Museum Board president Bob Wicks looked like a proud father during his turn as emcee of the opening. "Bob really drove this project," said Councillor Frank Armitage. "Bob and Kathy Clement who was behind the scenes were super supporters. It has been a real treat watching this project come together. It has been a great team effort."

Zenros, a start up in Denmark has created a new solar powered energy management system for hotels they believe will save hotels at least 35% in HLP costs over current sensor based technology.

Their solar panel system is integrated with the lights via the room controller, drawing power from man-made and natural light. Then, using Zigbee Smart Energy, the panel wirelessly communicates with all the electrical devices in the room ¨C the minibar, doors, windows, lights, TVs, etc. The use of solar energy and wireless eliminates any need for re-wiring the hotel room meaning that installation is significantly simplified in existing hotel buildings. The Zenros Solar Touch panels can be installed without the use of any new cables or external power and retrofitted to any hotel.

The bigger picture is that the Zenros Solar Touch panels are ideal for appliances or locations that have no electrical grid nearby. The solar lights can be used all day. Generally, it's not discontenting, but the older set may find it a chore. The seats aren't mounted as high compared to other compact crossovers; but at least the driver's side has height adjustment. Town shows resolve to rebuild

DUQUESNE, Mo. | Signs of recovery are beginning to sprout in the southwest Missouri town of Duquesne, severely damaged by the same tornado system that devastated Joplin last month.

About 60 percent to 70 percent of the town on the eastern edge of Joplin was damaged by the May 22 tornado, and at least eight people died. Piles of debris and the remains of homes and businesses still dot the town's landscape.

But last week, progress was noticeable. New street markers and stop signs have been installed, numerous residential and commercial permits have been issued, and some rebuilding has begun, according to the Joplin Globe.

City records show 250 homes were destroyed and another 250 were damaged. City officials decided against enacting a moratorium on new construction, as Joplin has done.

"We've lived here 46 years," said Bill Crampton, who along with his wife, Donna, decided to stay and repair their home. "We're not going anywhere."

At the Fast Trip convenience store, which was leveled by the storm, new rebar was up, a concrete slab was scheduled to be poured, and work had already begun on the foundation and plumbing. The store owners hope to reopen in 50 days.

"There is a lot of optimism in Duquesne right now," Mayor Denny White, 69, said Wednesday from his bed at Freeman Health System in Joplin.

He had been admitted Tuesday for treatment of a respiratory infection that his wife, Cathy, attributed to working nearly around the clock since the tornado. He was discharged Thursday.

White attributed part of the progress to help from outside the city.

But he also praised Duquesne's residents.

Drug barn 'clearly marked' as cannabis factory
