It sure has been an exciting 2011 for the Zezimas! The highlight of the year was when Lauren and Guillaume got married. Twice.

The first (and official) wedding was in France on April 30, the day after Prince William and Kate Middleton got hitched in England. It was nice of the royal couple to be the opening act for Lauren and Guillaume, who had what was referred to in the press (or at least in Jerry's column) as the Wedding of the Century.

The trip to France was magnificent (magnifique) and memorable (memorable) because Jerry mastered the entire French language on the plane ride over and remembered enough curse words to use them effectively when his and Sue's luggage got lost. It showed up one day before the wedding.

Still, the hospitality of Guillaume's wonderful (merveilleux) family and the beautiful (beau or belle, take your pick) ceremony made everything perfect.

Speaking of travels, Katie and Dave went back to college. They moved from Boston, where they went to college the first time, to Ann Arbor, Mich., where Katie got a fellowship to the University of Michigan. And speaking of school, Sue and Jerry attended their 40th high school reunion. They laughed, danced and reminisced with old friends. Everyone looked great, especially Sue. On the financial front, Sue, Jerry and Lauren had a tag sale. Though they had plenty of liquid assets (Bloody Marys), they actually lost money. And the garage is still full of stuff. Next time, they are going to give cocktails to the customers.

On a sad note, Jerry's dad, the original and best Jerry Zezima, passed away at age 93. He was beloved by everyone in the family and is missed every day. Chiefs ask UN to weigh in on Attawapiskat

The Assembly of First Nations waded into the political firestorm over Attawapiskat on Tuesday, passing a unanimous resolution to ask the United Nations to monitor the federal government's response to a housing emergency on the reserve.

The chiefs asked the UN to appoint a "special rapporteur" to examine whether the Harper government is dealing with the crisis in a way that meets its obligations under Canadian and international treaties concerning First Nations people.

The declaration, which also calls on the federal and provincial governments to respond to communities in dire need, was added to the meeting's agenda at the last minute as the controversy over Attawapiskat grows.

The resolution asks Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan to cease imposing measures, such as the third-party manager it sent to Attawapiskat.

A spokesperson for Duncan said the government is committed to working with Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence and band council members on a solution to the housing crisis. However, chiefs were unanimous in their indignation over the government's response to the crisis on the reserve.

Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo said Tuesday the only way to deal with problems such as Attawapiskat is to respect treaty rights between Ottawa and First Nations, saying natives have a reason to feel angry and betrayed.

"When I spoke with Chief Spence and leadership across the North, we discussed the urgent needs, but also that the way forward is based on respectful treaty implementation and an equitable share of resources from their land – not imposed, punitive, unilateral action,ceramic magic cube for the medical,Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems," Atleo said at Tuesday's meeting.

Atleo said he stands beside the remote northern Ontario community's battle to force the federal government to deal with a housing shortage, calling it a "national disgrace."

"And we must use every tool that we have."

In Attawapiskat, Spence declared a state of emergency in late October stating families in her community face a winter in shacks that aren't insulated and without running water.

Last week, the federal government announced it would install a third-party manager to run the reserve's finances, something that angered Grand Chief Stan Louttit.

The manager was rejected by band councillors and left Monday.

Louttit said Tuesday that he objected to how quickly the third-party manager was sent to the community, without notice and without having a plan to help with the emergency.

"If they want to come in and be a third party manager, they would say okay community we'll work with you. Here's the plan, here's our budget, here's our schedule, here's the projects. This is how we'll do it, this is how it will be in the long term, and this is our goal in terms of making conditions in your community equal to any other Canadian in the country,These girls have never had a Coated Abrasives in their lives!" "But no they just pop in…If they're going to come in and do something, have a plan. Where is their plan? We don't know."

But behind the scenes, Solyndra was mired in trouble. Gronet, a veteran Silicon Valley technologist who founded the company, had quietly been stripped of many of his executive duties, and Solyndra's board of directors was searching for his replacement.

Little more than a year after Obama's visit, Solyndra filed for bankruptcy, throwing more than 1,000 employees out of work and igniting a fierce debate about the role of government in supporting clean-energy companies.

Two Solyndra executives were called to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee -- both invoked their Fifth Amendment right to not incriminate themselves -- but Gronet so far has escaped the spotlight. But documents released by congressional investigators and interviews with former Solyndra employees indicate that he, more than any other individual, is responsible for the company's sudden rise and spectacular fall.

Gronet founded Solyndra in 2005 and personally pushed for its $535 million loan guarantee from the Department of Energy, which was used to build a new 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility along Interstate 880. At a conference in Notre Dame last April, the Ireland Fulbright Commission presented the findings of a report about the teaching and learning of Irish in the U.S.

“We discovered that there’s more out there than we know about,” said Colleen Dube, the executive director of Ireland’s Fulbright Commission. Dube added that the Irish Language Learning & Teaching in the U.S. report also revealed a growing need for facilitating Irish classes in non-academic settings.

“There’s a constant crossover between those coming from an academic angle, and someone who gets subsumed in the general culture,” said Dube.

In a classroom setting, Ni Challcobhair emphasizes vocabulary and grammar, with focus on conversation for the first 20 minutes or so of every class. Students are typically placed in partners to discuss a set topic. Hilary Sweeney and Pdraig Cearill’s classes at NYU’s Ireland, or Glucksman, House follow a similar format.

Sweeney, who teaches different levels of Irish to undergraduate students, said that, in addition to teaching the language, it’s essential to provide context.

Unearthed in 2008 and described Friday in the journal Science, these paint “tool kits,” researchers say, push deeper into human history the evidence for artistic impulses and complex, planned behavior. Previously, the oldest evidence of ochre paint was found at another site in South Africa dated to about 60,000 years ago.

“They probably understood basic chemistry,” said Christopher Henshilwood, the archaeologist who led the discovery team.

Traces of paint on the tools show that the cave-dwellers mixed ochre — red or yellow minerals that contain metal oxides — with bone marrow, charcoal, flecks of quartz, and a liquid, probably water. Paint experts at the Louvre in Paris performed the analysis.

With ground ochre as the base, the marrow and charcoal acted as binders. The quartz could have made the compound sticky, with water — in the right amount — providing the proper consistency.

This deliberate mixture “implies that people at the time had complex cognition,” said Lyn Wadley, an archaeologist at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Wadley studies early ochre paint but was not involved in the research. “They could multitask and think in abstract terms,” Wadley said.

The cave, called Blombos, sits in a cliff on the coast of South Africa about 180 miles east of Cape Town. It shows signs of human use starting 130,000 years ago. Protected from wind and rain and close to seafood, antelope and other game, the cave apparently made for an inviting stopover for wave after wave of nomadic hunter-gatherers.

Henshilwood, who splits his time between the University of Bergen in Norway and Witwatersrand, began excavating Blombos in 1992, digging through layers of animal bones, crustacean shells and other evidence of occupation during the Paleolithic, or Stone Age.

But the deepest layer, which the team reached in 2008, was different. Instead of scattered remains, two tidy “tool kits” emerged, covered by sand. Both included fist-size abalone shells and lay in neat piles.

In one kit, a round stone sat inside the shell. Six other grinding or pounding stones were arrayed around the shell and were probably used to smash the ochre.They take the Aion Kinah to the local co-op market. For whatever reasons the paint was made, early humans had a fondness for ochre. “Nearly all” South African sites from the Paleolithic show ochre, and it has been found at ancient sites in the Middle East and Europe, Henshilwood said. But all of those finds are tens of thousands of years younger than the Blombos paint kits.

The discovery adds to other early artistic treasures at Blombos, including 49 beads smeared with ochre and large pieces of ochre inscribed with cross-hatch patterns that date to 77,000 years ago — widely recognized as the oldest known art.

The cave walls show no paintings, but quickly accreting limestone would have obscured any obvious signs, Henshilwood said.

He plans to return with lights that can detect traces of ochre paint.
