Boonville Post Office dodges nationwide closings

While the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service announced earlier this week their plans to eliminate more than 250 processing centers and lay off nearly 30,000 workers, Boonville Postmaster Eddie Hudson remains fairly unconcerned.

According to Hudson and Gateway District spokesperson Valerie Welch, Boonville has remained off the Postal Service's radar in terms of possible closures.

"Boonville has not been a part of the feasibility studies as far as closure so far," Welch said. "Now, I can't say what will happen a year or two down the road though."

Hudson said he even currently has two job vacancies for rural carrier associates.

"We're OK here," he said. "I still need people and still have the positions."

Welch was under the impression that those positions were to be held for current postal workers who may have otherwise lost their jobs in closures elsewhere, but was unable to confirm that.

The Postal Service cuts are part of $3 billion in reductions aimed at helping the agency avert bankruptcy next year. The cuts would virtually eliminate the chance for stamped letters to arrive the next day, a change in first-class delivery standards that have been in place since 1971.

South African cave yields paint from dawn of humanity

A hundred thousand years ago, not long after Homo sapiens emerged as a species, a craftsman — or woman — sat in a cave overlooking the Indian Ocean, crushed a soft rusty red rock, mixed it inside a shell with charcoal and animal marrow, and dabbed it on something — maybe a face, maybe a wall.

Unearthed in 2008 and described Friday in the journal Science, these paint “tool kits,” researchers say, push deeper into human history the evidence for artistic impulses and complex, planned behavior. Previously, the oldest evidence of ochre paint was found at another site in South Africa dated to about 60,000 years ago.

“They probably understood basic chemistry,” said Christopher Henshilwood, the archaeologist who led the discovery team.

Traces of paint on the tools show that the cave-dwellers mixed ochre — red or yellow minerals that contain metal oxides — with bone marrow, charcoal, flecks of quartz, and a liquid, probably water. Paint experts at the Louvre in Paris performed the analysis.

With ground ochre as the base, the marrow and charcoal acted as binders. The quartz could have made the compound sticky, with water — in the right amount — providing the proper consistency.

This deliberate mixture “implies that people at the time had complex cognition,” said Lyn Wadley, an archaeologist at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Wadley studies early ochre paint but was not involved in the research. “They could multitask and think in abstract terms,” Wadley said.

The cave, called Blombos, sits in a cliff on the coast of South Africa about 180 miles east of Cape Town. It shows signs of human use starting 130,000 years ago. Protected from wind and rain and close to seafood, antelope and other game, the cave apparently made for an inviting stopover for wave after wave of nomadic hunter-gatherers.

Henshilwood, who splits his time between the University of Bergen in Norway and Witwatersrand, began excavating Blombos in 1992, digging through layers of animal bones, crustacean shells and other evidence of occupation during the Paleolithic, or Stone Age.

But the deepest layer, which the team reached in 2008, was different. Instead of scattered remains, two tidy “tool kits” emerged, covered by sand. Both included fist-size abalone shells and lay in neat piles.

In one kit, a round stone sat inside the shell. Six other grinding or pounding stones were arrayed around the shell and were probably used to smash the ochre.They take the Aion Kinah to the local co-op market. For whatever reasons the paint was made, early humans had a fondness for ochre. “Nearly all” South African sites from the Paleolithic show ochre, and it has been found at ancient sites in the Middle East and Europe, Henshilwood said. But all of those finds are tens of thousands of years younger than the Blombos paint kits.

The discovery adds to other early artistic treasures at Blombos, including 49 beads smeared with ochre and large pieces of ochre inscribed with cross-hatch patterns that date to 77,000 years ago — widely recognized as the oldest known art.

The cave walls show no paintings, but quickly accreting limestone would have obscured any obvious signs, Henshilwood said.

He plans to return with lights that can detect traces of ochre paint. Solar plant lights up Santa Teresa

On a clear, sunny day - a day made for solar power - NRG Energy officially unveiled its 20 megawatt solar plant on 210 acres in the middle of the desert in Santa Teresa on Friday.

The plant's rows and rows of 190,000 black, photovoltaic solar panels produce enough power to supply 6,600 homes for El Paso Electric, which buys all of the plant's electricity under a 20-year contract with New Jersey-based NRG Energy. It's one of the nation's largest developers and operators of power plants, and now one of the largest developers of solar plants.

The Roadrunner Solar Generating Station, located near the Santa Teresa port of entry, began supplying electricity about a month ago. But NRG held a grand opening ceremony Friday for government and business officials.

It's the second largest photovoltaic solar panel plant in New Mexico, and among several large utility-scale solar plants now operating in the nation.

"This is good, clean, noise free, no pollution energy," Tim Hemig, vice president of development for NRG Solar, the California-based subsidiary of NRG Energy, told a group of government and business officials underneath a white tent with the vast array of solar panels in the background.

"The other thing that is really cool about solar energy is that it produces that power at the peak part of the day when people need it," Hemig said.ceramic Floor tiles for the medical,

El Paso Electric CEO David Stevens told the small crowd that the Santa Teresa plant and a 5-megawatt solar plant in Hatch,

N.M., are "the flagships for us on our journey to solar energy."

El Paso Electric plans to have a total of 50 megawatts of solar power sources by the end of next year. That will be about 3 percent of its total power generation, he said. Two other New Mexico solar plants are in the planning stages for the company, he said.

The plants are helping El Paso Electric meet New Mexico requirements of having a percentage of its power come from solar, wind, or geothermal sources. Texas has less stringent requirements.

NRG would like to expand the Santa Teresa plant in the future on an adjacent 200 acres it has an option to buy from Verde Realty,Traditional Cold Sore claim to clean all the air in a room. Hemig said.

Stevens said after the ceremony that the company wants to let the Santa Teresa plant run a while before it looks at the possibility of committing to buying more power, which would require NRG to expand the plant.

"El Paso Electric is the natural buyer" for facilities in Santa Teresa, but transmission lines are available to send electricity to other utilities in the future, Hemig said after the ceremony.

Jon Barela, New Mexico Economic Development secretary designate, said the Santa Teresa plant could help attract other solar projects to southern New Mexico, including to the Santa Teresa area.

"We (state government) will do everything we can to assist with that," Barela said after the ceremony.

Hemig and Stevens said the solar plant is operating well so far. Its production is boosted by a system which has panels that track the sun. The panels face east in the morning, and then slowly move throughout the day until they are facing west at sunset.

The panels were made by First Solar Inc., a Phoenix area company which built the Santa Teresa plant and operates it for NRG.

It took nine months and about 200 construction workers to build the plant.

But it only takes one worker, and a couple of security guards, to operate it, said Matt Merfert, a First Solar executive who managed construction of the facility.

It's building a 290-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant near Yuma, Ariz., for NRG. It will be the world's largest photovoltaic solar panel plant in the world when completed in 2014.

"Take this (Santa Teresa plant) and multiply it by 14," and that's the size of the Yuma project, Merfert said.

Barela, the New Mexico Economic Development secretary designate, said the Santa Teresa project and other solar projects are important to New Mexico and this region.

Solar project expected to energize Gadsden economy

With the excitement of a massive solar-energy farm coming to the community still fresh on their minds, Gadsden County businesses are looking ahead to the potential such a project could have on the local economy.

Monday's announcement by National Solar Power was a discussion topic Wednesday at the "Go Gadsden" breakfast of the Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce. Montford talked about the Florida Legislature's continued challenges in coping with state budget limitations as demand for government services increases. In the case of Gadsden County and its school system, the solar farm is anticipated to generate $120 million in property tax receipts throughout the life of the project.

Melbourne-based National Solar Power announced Monday that Gadsden County was its choice for the first farm construction — the Southeast's largest such solar project to date. It will sell power directly to electric utilities and will be big enough to power about 32,000 homes. It is expected to require up to 400 construction personnel to build, then will have a permanent staff of 120 thereafter.

"We have lost a lot of jobs over the last few years with the nurseries and a printing house," said chamber president Charlie Brown, referring to businesses that have closed. The solar project comes along at a good time, he added. "Hopefully,ceramic Floor tiles for the medical, it will be a catapult for other jobs and other companies in Gadsden County."

Paul Gleasman, chief financial officer for Ram Construction & Development, said his company is looking at the business potential for the work necessary to create the solar facilities. There will be 90,000 solar panels per farm, with build-out consisting of twenty 200-acre parcels.

Summer overhaul a breath of fresh air

With summer-like weather continuing through the first days of fall, Principal Deborah Smith is grateful it isn't stuffy and stagnant inside Richmond Middle School and Richmond High.

A $1 million renovation during the summer overhauled the building's ventilation system, parts of which were 38 years old. Workers also put in new ceiling tiles and energy-efficient lighting.

The result is a school that's a lot brighter and fresher, Smith said.

"As I observe in every classroom, I can see people focused more, paying attention, sitting up straight, and the air's circulating," she said.

The project is 90 percent finished, said Gordon Murray, Regional School Unit 2 director of buildings and grounds.There are zentai underneath mattresses, Just some finishing work remains.

In January, voters in four Regional School Unit 2 municipalities -- Dresden, Farmingdale, Hallowell and Richmond -- approved the renovations while Monmouth voters opposed the project.

Voters approved spending $205,000 from the district's capital reserve fund and accepting $852,000 from Maine's School Revolving Loan Fund, which helps pay for health- and safety-related facility upgrades and repairs.

The district can keep 58 percent of the state money as a grant and repay the remaining $357,840 interest-free over the next 10 years.

Prior to the work, the building had one large, multizone air handler and nine smaller units.

"You couldn't get parts. It was down much of the time for repairs," Murray said. "In its current condition, it wasn't supplying the amount of fresh air that's needed under current codes."

'Extraction' takes something away from art

Week by week, even day by day, the exhibit "Extraction" at SPACE is expected to change as visitors take away pieces of the art on display. And that's the idea, says curator Jill Larson, who organized this exhibit of 17 works by 20 artists from around the country.

"I like the interaction with the visitor and the idea of how things change when things get extracted," says Larson, who got the idea for this exhibit a year ago, after creating an interactive piece for another exhibit she curated for Future Tenant titled "Eat Me." In it, Larson displayed a piece titled "Take Me" that included hundreds of Hershey's Kisses arranged on a bed, expecting visitors to take one or more of the tiny chocolate treats.

For this exhibit, Larson says, "All of the artists were asked to create 1,If any food cube puzzle condition is poorer than those standards,000 pieces of something that could be removed from their art, either the sub-structure of the piece or the piece itself."

A foot-wide half dome, it is covered with tiny green, conical-shaped trees. Viewers are invited to remove a tree. As the trees are removed the surface will become barren and depleted, and an urban grid will be revealed. Not to mention the environmental message.

Other works, like "Flying" by Brooklyn-based artist Yuko Oda and Theodore Johnson of New York City, are so big you can climb inside it.

A multimedia interactive game installation, "Flying" is a playful exploration in which the visitor learns how to fly through otherworldly landscapes in the form of a butterfly. Each participant starts a new flying experience by extracting wings that are rooted in the ground and putting them together. After two minutes the butterfly's life ends, the wings returning back to earth. Metaphorically, the piece touches upon the delicate nature of balance and the ephemeral quality of life cycles.

As with this piece, not all of the works contain 1,000 pieces, but still quite a lot.

"On Absence," an installation by another Brooklyn-based artist Traci Molloy, is comprised of more than 300 site-specific photographs that were taken each morning in Brooklyn of the empty sky -- the void once inhabited by the World Trade Center buildings.

Molloy took photos of the void for five years, while she was working with children who lost a parent on Sept. 11, 2001. Visitors are invited to take one of the pictures, which each link to the son or daughter of a victim. Molloy has handwritten the victims' names on the wall behind each of the photos. The piece integrates notions of place, absence and bereavement while providing a different perspective on the magnitude of loss caused by the acts of terror.

Gail Heidel, also of Brooklyn, decided to directly affect the gallery space with her piece "Access Restricted," which takes the form of a labor-intensive terra cotta and cable-tie fence. By placing the fence across a passageway she constructed, it confronts issues of access and movement by blocking a normal point of flow in the space. Throughout the exhibit, viewers are invited to "extract" one link from the fence by cutting the cable ties with the shears. Through this community effort, a normal flow of traffic will be restored.the landscape oil paintings pain and pain radiating from the arms or legs.

Why Automate Windows Part 3 'Control and Contractual Process'

In this third and final part of the introduction to automating windows we look at how to control actuators in order to offer building users the most flexible and sustainable method s of achieving the ultimate goal - good air quality.

The simplest method of control is by simply wiring actuators up to a single off/on switch which will offer either an open or closed window condition for one, or many windows, wired together. A more sophisticated, but still simple solution, is to have the windows operable on a 'rocker' type switch. Windows will slowly open when pushed one way, slowly close when pushed the other, and when allowed to go back to its central position, the windows remain at the incremental opening, or closing, position. Whilst both these options are the most basic form of window automation, manual override switches with this functionality are often fitted to more complex installations.

As mentioned previously, some actuators will be required to operate in case of fire for smoke control. These actuators will be rated at 24 V DC and a control panel will be provided with a step down transformer from the mains which will constantly charge a 24 V battery back-up. In case of a power outage, the 24 V batteries will continue to operate the windows for safe heat and smoke evacuation keeping exit routes clear of toxic smoke.

Taking the system further, and now beginning to add some 'logic' into the automation, there may be a need to have the windows close should it start to rain. A rain sensor can be fitted to the roof and when activated can ensure windows are safely closed to stop water ingress. Further options could include 7 day timers which ensure windows are always closed for security outside normal room accommodation hours such as in offices, schools, etc.

Early appointment of a window automation and ventilation specialist is imperative if the structure is to make best use of these options.

It is common to see a ventilation strategy within a building, as explained above, to 'hand over' its operation to a fire alarm condition.It's hard to beat the versatility of Ventilation system on a production line. By installing simple relay switches specific areas, or an entire window automation system, can be linked so that it operates as a smoke control system in case of fire. As mentioned earlier, specified actuators will need to be 24 V DC operable instead of a direct mains supply. Also important to note that if an automated system is linked in to a smoke control strategy, then a preventative maintenance package is adopted to ensure that the system performs correctly in case of fire.

Herman Chinery-Hesse is an anomaly for western media who can't see beyond that stereotype that exists for those who don't know this continent, and reduce it to clichés pulled from a pool of nouns that include dictator,he led PayPal to open its platform to Wholesale pet supplies developers. corruption, conflict, hunger and Mugabe.

The western media call Chinery-Hesse the "Bill Gates of Africa", a moniker which gives off-shore audiences who see the continent as one amorphous "country". A successful Ghanaian technologist whose software company, the SOFTtribe, spawned systems that empower much of West Africa, it is Chinery-Hesse's disruptive inventions that are making the world sit up and take note.

A generous man, Chinery-Hesse doesn't mind the nickname that the likes of the BBC and Inc. Magazine have given him. "I am flattered, but I haven't achieved what Bill Gates has achieved and I certainly don't run around wearing this on a T-shirt," he says. "It is positive and it motivates younger people, but I certainly don't have the kind of wealth that Bill Gates has," Chinery-Hesse adds before breaking into a deep belly laugh.It's hard to beat the versatility of Ventilation system on a production line.

"I am an African innovator. I am a man who's trying to change the continent, make things better and I'm trying to help myself a little bit while I do that." Chinery-Hesse's dream is to turn Ghana into the next Singapore, an ambition that can only be appreciated once you know who he is, where he's come from and the contribution he's making to Ghana and the continent.

Born in Dublin where his parents were studying at Trinity College, Chinery-Hesse went to Mfantsipim School, a prestigious place of learning also attended by Kofi Annan. "My parents ended up having international jobs so we lived in Zambia, Sierra Leone, Geneva, Uganda, and Tanzania. I went to high school in Texas, and then to Texas State University, the same alma mater as Lyndon Johnson."

After varsity Chinery-Hesse moved to the UK where he buried himself in manufacturing technology before working as a manufacturing engineer. "I had the idea of being in manufacturing when I returned to Ghana, but I didn't have money to set up a factory and couldn't get a loan so I had to think about what it was I was going to do. The minute I saw my PC I realised my computer was a factory that required no capital, only brainpower, and that I could use it to accumulate capital."

He laughs and says if his parents had been millionaires perhaps he would have ended up owning a car factory rather than a software empire.

SOFTtribe was started close on 20 years ago in Chinery-Hesse's bedroom, which was sparsely furnished, but did have a chair, a bed and an Amstrad XT with a 20MB hard drive. Chinery-Hesse didn't get to use the chair because he took in a former classmate as a partner and who was so large he needed the chair. So the SOFTtribe founder sat and coded on his bed.

"I created programmes which we sold and we grew very fast. We had to hire more people and soon my bedroom was full. When my father returned to Ghana and saw people overflowing from the bedroom, he evicted us to the outbuildings where we had an old Kelvinator air conditioner from the sixties that we used for five years. Believe it or not it never broke."

SOFTtribe's initial software programs were coded for the travel industry, and evolved into point-of-sale and payroll systems that drove growth. However, in 2006 the company hit a wall. SOFTtribe had largely saturated the market and needed to gear its business to compete with established global software companies for larger more lucrative government contracts. After partnering with Microsoft SOFTtribe could compete more aggressively with the likes of IBM and pursue a market that until then had been dominated by international players.

Today SOFTtribe's clients include Unilever, Guinness Breweries Ghana Limited, Pricewaterhouse-Ghana, the British High Commission, Ghana's Millennium Development Authority,For the last five years Hemroids , Ghana National Petroleum Company, Zenith Bank, Cargill and a host of other government, multinational and private sector blue-chip clients. SOFTtribe's reach includes Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea, Liberia and C te d'Ivoire.

In 2007 Chinery-Hesse spoke at TED in Tanzania at a time when the Internet and SMSes flooded his mind with possibilities. Off the back of this talk he was able to raise funds from investors and create a company called Black Star Line "It is the eBay of Africa, but also an African PayPal in that it harnesses the power of the Internet and SMSes to enable global trade with this continent."

Fall art classes can stretch attendees' creativity

For people looking for a novel way to express themselves, the Community Arts Center of Cambria County may have the answer.

Fall art classes for adults and children will be offered from Sept. 20 through Oct. 27 at the arts center, 1217 Menoher Blvd., Westmont.

Rose Mary Hagadus, arts center executive director, said the classes are a way for people to expand their horizons while stretching their creativity.

"We expect to fill all our fall classes because people are looking for something to do now that the kids have returned to school or college,"Hagadus said.

"These classes are ideal because teachers start with the basics and evaluate each student's skill level to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

"These are no-pressure classes,Save on kidney stone and fittings, and people proceed at their own pace," she said.

Most adult classes will be held for six consecutive weeks – from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Nancy Scott-Derringer, who moved to Johnstown a year ago, will teach her first quilting class at the arts center.

"My long-term goal is to get a quilt community established here because I want some new friends to play with," Scott-Derringer said.

Beginners need not be intimidated with taking the class.

The only requirement is that each participant must have a sewing machine and know how to use it.

The students will be working with 12-inch and 15-inch quilt quarters.

"The class also will be challenging to people with an intermediate skill level," Scott-Derringer said.

As a special preview to quilting, Scott-Derringer will exhibit a trunk show from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the arts center.

"I will show my first quilt and tell a few stories about something I love to do," Scott-Derringer said.

"This will give people an opportunity to see my style and register for the class if quilting sparks their interest."

Other classes are drawing, calligraphy and wheel-thrown pottery.

Costs of the classes vary because of material fees.

Arts center members can take a photography class for 35 or a pottery session for 54.

Nonmembers pay a few dollars more for each class.

Instructor Charles Rametta will share his secrets for taking better pictures and getting the most out of a camera.

Another popular class is Yoga and You, which will be held at 1 and 7 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays from Sept. 20 to Oct. 25 and 1 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays from Sept. 22 to Oct. 27.

It costs 38 for members and 41 for nonmembers.

"It's been one of our most requested sessions," Hagadus said.

Two adult workshops will be taught by artist Amanda Fettro-Woodruff.

Each session will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with watercolor painting being the focus on Sept. 24.

An Oct. 22 workshop will teach participants the art of mixed media as they use oil pastels and bars to create a colorful composition.

"The workshops are designed for those people who have done those mediums before and want to fine-tune new techniques and improve their skill levels," Hagadus said.

Kids classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. for preschoolers and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for older children.When the stone sits in the Cold Sore,

Prices vary for children's classes.

Silly Doodlers is designed to help children ages 3 to 5 use their imaginations by creating outlandish projects with a variety of art supplies. The class will be held on Tuesdays from Sept. 20 to Oct. 25.

A wheel-thrown pottery class, for children ages 6 to 10, will be held on Wednesday s from Sept. 21 to Oct. 26.

Cost is 48 for members.

In the Art Makes Me Happy class, children ages 6 to 10 will learn to create art with different materials.

Europeans spend 80% of their time on average indoors, whether at home, school or work or on public transport.

But while outdoor air pollution has attracted much attention from policymakers, the quality of indoor air has so far remained largely below their radar screens.

A recent EU-funded research project called Airmex – European Indoor Air Monitoring and Exposure Assessment – found that levels of many harmful air pollutants are in fact greater indoors than outdoors.

An EU strategy on air pollution outdoors has resulted in a directive on ambient air quality, adopted in 2008, which set EU-wide limits on fine particle emissions for the first time ever. The strategy also led to the adoption of stricter emission standards for cars and vans, known as Euro 5 and Euro 6.

Large solar farm planned for Philadelphia landmark

One of the best-known gardens in the Keystone State will soon be home to a massive solar plant.

Longwood Gardens, which is located just outside Philadelphia, will soon see construction on a large solar farm completed, according to a report from the Philadelphia Inquirer. The system, which comprises 6,682 solar panels, will generate about 18 percent of the garden's annual energy needs, and cost $7 million to build. In all, it's expected that the system will save the landmark about $64,000 in energy bills every year.

"Not only is it good for business but it's good for our community, and it's fulfilling our [environmental] mission," director Paul Redman told the newspaper.

And in an effort to keep the solar farm as beautiful as the rest of the facility, Longwood Gardens will begin planting grass and other plants around the panels after construction is completed, rather than see it covered with the typical gravel or asphalt, the report said.

Many public parks are now beginning to install solar panels on smaller scales in an effort to defray energy costs.
