Household waste piles up during holiday season

The excesses of the holiday season not only sneak up on the waistline or drain the pocketbook; they carve out space at local landfills.

A report by an independent research organization based in Washington, D.C., said Americans generate an extra 5 million tons of household waste each year between Thanksgiving and New Year's, including three times as much food waste as other times of the year.

By the latter part of 2006, Call said the program had collected more than 300,000 pounds of goods from 14 participating stores.

Tressler added that Coca-Cola hasn't completely abandoned glass packaging.

"In fact, glass packaging delivers 13 percent of our global volume, which is about as much as in cans," she said. "In North America, we bottle and sell Coca-Cola, as well as Diet Coke and Sprite, in 8-ounce glass bottles."

HeartSong, who has been collecting for more than 30 years, said she also finds pieces of old, brown Clorox bottles, which are "a really terrific dark, olivey shade of glass."

She added that she and her partner have "secret beaches" in Delaware, whose locations she would never divulge.

Buckler also said she doesn't share her "hot spots" with others.

"You don't tell people about your personal spots because it's like treasure," she said. "If you tell one person, they tell one person and the next time you want to go out there, it's totally picked over."

However, she added, the beach is always changing and each time a wave crashes, something new is brought to shore.

"It depends on the different tides and what the sea glass gods, as I like to call them, decide to release," she said. "Some days are better than others."

The following is an excerpt from the Salem Police Department's Monday and Tuesday logs. Police responded to two calls about unattended four-year-olds. They also made several arrests. A complete arrest log can be found here.

Monday

At 4:04 p.m. Monday, police said a female reported a dark blue Ford Taurus following her from Atlantic Street to Margin Street.

Police responded to Grove Street at 5:47 p.m. Monday after police said it was reported a four-year-old boy was at the park by himself. When the caller asked the boy if his parents were around, the boy said his dad was at home sleeping, the caller said. Police responded, picked the boy up and explained that they were going to take a walk to find his parents. The responding officer said a young man playing at the basketball court came running over and told the officer he had been watching his brother from the court. The officer told the young man his brother should not have been left alone and spoke with the boys' parents.

Police responded to Busa Wine and Spirits at 6:13 p.m. Monday after it was reported a four-year-old boy was left unattended at the front of the business for 30 minutes. Police said they brought the boy to the station after they checked the area and were not able to find his parents or caretaker. Police said a female came to the station and said her husband brought her son with him to put oil in the motor vehicle when her son went missing.

Police received a call about a possible stolen vehicle recovery on Pope Street at 6:22 p.m. Monday. Police said the officer saw a Toyota in the parking lot that had all the interior taken out except for the front two seats and the steering wheel. Officers said it appeared parts were taken out when they opened the hood. The Lynn Police Department was notified about the stolen vehicle recovery, police said.

A motor vehicle break-in was reported at 7:39 p.m. Monday on Traders Way, police said. The caller reported the incident had just taken place and told police two male suspects were fleeing down Highland Avenue. Police stopped the suspect vehicle and two men admitted to breaking into the vehicle and stealing a bag. They also told police where they had dumped the bag and it was recovered. Nathan James Pierce and Donald Jeffrey Polich were both arrested on probable cause after police spoke to witnesses and the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime.

At 9:07 p.m. Monday, police said a Federal Street caller reported someone threw a rock through a third floor window the night prior.buy landscape oil paintings online.

Police received a call from Memorial Drive about a homeless campsite set up along the fence by Camp Naumkeag at 11:20 p.m. Monday. Police said they found an old tent and rolled up bedding material.

Tuesday

At 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, a North Street caller reported there was a loud bang in the area. The neighbors told police they heard a loud bang and saw a puff of smoke. Police were not able to find anything out of the ordinary.The name "magic cube" is not unique.

Police said they received a call about two popped tires on a taxi on Jefferson Avenue at 1:54 a.m. Tuesday.you will need to get an offshore merchant account. Police said the tires had been slashed.

Two female parties (Lauren Marie Campbell and Samantha Marie Felix) were arrested on liquor charges after a traffic stop on Fort Avenue at 1:57 p.m. Tuesday. Two others will be summonsed to court, police said.

Police received a call that a party broke windows to a motor vehicle at 4:07 a.m. Tuesday. The owner of the vehicle, her daughter and another resident told police they knew and witnessed the suspects smash out windows with a baseball bat. Police found the suspect vehicle and saw the baseball bat in the car with pieces of glass embedded in it. Police also found a vodka bottle in the car, but said there was no evidence vodka had been consumed by either suspect that day. Alissa Justine Navarez and Sasha Sharilyne Pimental were both arrested and charged after the vehicle stop.
