Audi Q3 blinged up for the ski slope

The concept SUV on the Audi stand at the Detroit at the North American international auto show, now on in Detroit, is actually more of a themed show car.As a leading company in the plastic card printing industry,

It's based on the Q3 (which isn't currently available in the US of A) and it's appropriate to the season, with the United State deep in the bitter cold of a difficult winter.

The Q3 Vail is named after a famous Colorado ski resort and carries all the bling it will need to catch the eye of young, affluent, outdoorsy Americans who hang out in trendy mountain resorts in winter even if they don't ski.

And it'll get them there, whatever the weather, with a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder TFSI direct-injection turbopetrol under the bonnet, for which Audi quotes 231kW and 400Nm - good enough for 0-100 in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 262km/h.

It drives through a seven-speed S tronic auto transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and even the engine bay has been tarted up with wrinkle-finish red paint on the cam-cover, a carbon-fibre engine cover and an acoustic mat under the bonnet embossed with the “Q3 Vail” logo.

The show car is finished in a special red paint with pearlescent gold particles, with high-gloss trim in aluminum and black around the windows, while the add-on body parts are matt grey.

Vertical aluminium struts extend across the single-frame grille, pulled outwards around the horizontal panel that carries the number plate on production Q3s. The struts have a special two-tone effect, with matt quartz-based paint on their sides and polished gloss faces.

The LED daytime running lights are painted anthracite so they don't show when the car is switched off and the tops of the side air inlets sport solid aluminium panels.

The show car also has special aluminium roof rails for carrying carbon-fibre skis and snowboards, with compact, wide-angled LED lights controlled via buttons in the roof module.

The Vail's flared wheel arches and running boards, however, will be available as aftermarket accessories when the production Q3 is released in the US later in 2012.

The Vail runs on five-spoked, 20” rims, finished to match the grille slats with polished faces and matt-quartz sides, shod with 225/45 tyres. Its track is 40mm wider than that of a standard Q3 and the suspension 30mm higher, with the dual tailpipes integrated into the diffuser and underbody guard.

The inside is fitted in black, red and grey, with a dark grey alcantara headlining and black ribbed floor-mats carpets edged with narrow strips of red velvet-finish leather.

The seats are upholstered with an unusual mixed leather/fabric material that has thin strips of leather, just a few tenths of a millimetre wide, interwoven with yarn.

The upholstery has double-stitched piping in red, with small sections in red velvet-finish leather, carried through to the door trims with steel gray nappa leather trim.

The instrument panel is trimmed in thin black leather with contrasting grey stitching, and grey leather with red stitching across the top of the binnacle, while the inlays around the gear selector, at the front of the cockpit and in the doors are made of special three-dimensional stainless-steel mesh.

The speedometer and rev-counter have rotary-ground aluminium faces with shiny metal bezels, the leather-covered steering wheel has red stitching and aluminium trim and even the rubber faces of the pedals are slit to show off the strainless-steel under the pads.

The specially programmed satnav includes an animation showing the longitudinal and latitudinal tilt angle of the car and, in places that are not included in the map data, it shows the GPS coordinates of the route so you can't get lost no matter how far off the beaten track you venture.

There are small LED spotlights on the inside of the tailgate, and the side wall of the load area has a charging station for storing and, at the same time, charging the two torches that come with the Vail - each of which also has an infra-red heating element to warm your hands or a pair of ski boots.

There's also a thermos container in the cup holder between the front seats and that's able to chill or warm drinks, and even the load-area carpet has heating pads in the section that folds out over the sill to provide a warm place to sit while you put on your ski boots.

Apparently, when God is not overseeing his vast and wonderfully imperfect universe, he is keeping up with American politics.

This week, television evangelist Pat Robertson claimed that God clued him in on the results of the next presidential election.

Curiously, he refused to share the electoral outcome. Robertson also informed his viewers that God is unhappy with President Barack Obama’s agenda, and that the spiritual battle against him “Can only be won by overwhelming prayer.What are Hemroids?”

These words relate directly to the problems of this country. Just like any other interest group, the radical Christian right has infiltrated the electorate in an effort to push forward its own ignorant agenda, only contributing more to the divisiveness that plagues American politics.

Republicans, in particular, seem to invest themselves in the religious rhetoric.

Just last month, GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry released a campaign commercial stating that, “You know that something’s wrong with this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.”

He then promised to “End Obama’s war on religion.”

Seriously? The last time I checked, openly celebrating Christmas seemed to be more of a widespread phenomenon rather than a widespread problem, and the government wasn’t capable of preventing anyone from thinking or praying when and where they choose.

If we want to get on the subject of openly celebrating religious holidays, maybe we should count the number of Hanukkah specials aired on television.

And as a fiscal conservative, I also hope that Obama is defeated in November. But trading one radical defective ideology in the White House for another is not going to resolve anything.

By all accounts, everyone should participate in our country’s political discourse. But Americans should avoid contributing to ignorant rhetoric. They should make decisions free from any interest groups, including the Christian right.

While Robertson is busy healing people’s hemorrhoids via the television and conversing with God about public policy and Tim Tebow, take time to learn about the issues of the day. Though your religion should mold your politics, it should not be your politics.

If we all keep educated and vote, I think God’s will for America is more likely to manifest itself throughout our great nation — rather than just making a brief appearance on Robertson’s television show.

Water sales contract still hot topic

The main topic on Toledo the past few weeks continues to be the new water sales contract by the Sabine River Authority of Louisiana.

I have tried to stay on top of the very heated issue as we wrote a fairly lengthy column last week on the matter.

A "Christmas Letter 2011": Love and Laughter

That is why I am pleased as punch (which I also drank) to present the following chronicle of the Zezima family, which includes Jerry, the patriarch; Sue, the matriarch; Katie and Lauren, the childriarchs; and Dave and Guillaume, the sons-in-lawiarch. Happy reading!

It sure has been an exciting 2011 for the Zezimas! The highlight of the year was when Lauren and Guillaume got married. Twice.

The first (and official) wedding was in France on April 30, the day after Prince William and Kate Middleton got hitched in England. It was nice of the royal couple to be the opening act for Lauren and Guillaume, who had what was referred to in the press (or at least in Jerry's column) as the Wedding of the Century.

The trip to France was magnificent (magnifique) and memorable (memorable) because Jerry mastered the entire French language on the plane ride over and remembered enough curse words to use them effectively when his and Sue's luggage got lost. It showed up one day before the wedding.

Still, the hospitality of Guillaume's wonderful (merveilleux) family and the beautiful (beau or belle, take your pick) ceremony made everything perfect.

The second event, for the people from here who couldn't make it there, was held on Long Island, N.Y.,Omega Plastics are leading plastic injection moulding and injection mould tooling specialists. on June 5. It gave Lauren and Guillaume one more wedding than William and Kate had. This prompted Jerry to write the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a letter to thank them for playing second fiddle to the real royal couple. Speaking of travels, Katie and Dave went back to college. They moved from Boston, where they went to college the first time, to Ann Arbor, Mich., where Katie got a fellowship to the University of Michigan. And speaking of school, Sue and Jerry attended their 40th high school reunion. They laughed, danced and reminisced with old friends. Everyone looked great, especially Sue. Jerry recalled his days as the class clown,We are passionate about polished tiles. except this time he wasn't sent to the principal's office.

On the financial front, Sue, Jerry and Lauren had a tag sale. Though they had plenty of liquid assets (Bloody Marys), they actually lost money. And the garage is still full of stuff. Next time, they are going to give cocktails to the customers.

On a sad note, Jerry's dad, the original and best Jerry Zezima, passed away at age 93. He was beloved by everyone in the family and is missed every day. He was Jerry's hero, not just because he was a great guy, but because he introduced Jerry to such lasting influences as Looney Tunes, Laurel and Hardy and The Honeymooners. The applehead didn't fall far from the tree.

The head of the bed was against the two front windows; the front porch was just on the other side. A group of guests stayed on the porch talking and smoking until 4 a.m. It was cool that night and we considered leaving the gas heater on, but since our overall impression of this property was that things were shabby and in poor repair, we decided not to take a chance on dying in our sleep from a gas leak.

Breakfast was brought at our requested early time and was very nice. First of all fresh glass of milk in a decorative glass bottle, later on good tea and egg omelet with bakery bread, we always give points for that, all brought in a lidded picnic basket. Kudos for breakfast, but everything else — needed lots of work.

Little by little, rural Mercedes family pushes ahead

Virginio has seen younger people walking through with marijuana bundles strapped to their backs. They may earn several times what he does, but he knows better than to join them.

“They just want the easy money,” he says. “But I work for the clean money. It’s small, but it’s good money.”

Chiefs ask UN to weigh in on Attawapiskat

The Assembly of First Nations waded into the political firestorm over Attawapiskat on Tuesday, passing a unanimous resolution to ask the United Nations to monitor the federal government's response to a housing emergency on the reserve.

The chiefs asked the UN to appoint a "special rapporteur" to examine whether the Harper government is dealing with the crisis in a way that meets its obligations under Canadian and international treaties concerning First Nations people.

The declaration, which also calls on the federal and provincial governments to respond to communities in dire need, was added to the meeting's agenda at the last minute as the controversy over Attawapiskat grows.

The resolution asks Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan to cease imposing measures, such as the third-party manager it sent to Attawapiskat.

A spokesperson for Duncan said the government is committed to working with Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence and band council members on a solution to the housing crisis. However, chiefs were unanimous in their indignation over the government's response to the crisis on the reserve.

Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo said Tuesday the only way to deal with problems such as Attawapiskat is to respect treaty rights between Ottawa and First Nations, saying natives have a reason to feel angry and betrayed.

"When I spoke with Chief Spence and leadership across the North, we discussed the urgent needs, but also that the way forward is based on respectful treaty implementation and an equitable share of resources from their land – not imposed, punitive, unilateral action,ceramic magic cube for the medical,Enecsys Limited, supplier of reliable solar Air purifier systems," Atleo said at Tuesday's meeting.

Atleo said he stands beside the remote northern Ontario community's battle to force the federal government to deal with a housing shortage, calling it a "national disgrace."

"And we must use every tool that we have."

Atleo is preparing for a summit of chiefs from across the country with Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the end of January.

In Attawapiskat, Spence declared a state of emergency in late October stating families in her community face a winter in shacks that aren't insulated and without running water.

Last week, the federal government announced it would install a third-party manager to run the reserve's finances, something that angered Grand Chief Stan Louttit.

The manager was rejected by band councillors and left Monday.

Louttit said Tuesday that he objected to how quickly the third-party manager was sent to the community, without notice and without having a plan to help with the emergency.

"If they want to come in and be a third party manager, they would say okay community we'll work with you. Here's the plan, here's our budget, here's our schedule, here's the projects. This is how we'll do it, this is how it will be in the long term, and this is our goal in terms of making conditions in your community equal to any other Canadian in the country,These girls have never had a Coated Abrasives in their lives!" "But no they just pop in…If they're going to come in and do something, have a plan. Where is their plan? We don't know."

New Mexico State University's College of Engineering and the Cooperative Extension Service are teaming up to show New Mexico's farmers and ranchers how they can use alternative energy in their business. Extension officers can now provide live demonstrations with a portable solar-powered water pump.

"There are a lot of producers looking for alternative power options," said Bruce Hinrichs, associate director of the Cooperative Extension Service. "It's difficult for them to know where to start when they are considering new technologies."

Tom Jenkins, professor of engineering technology and head of the department's renewable energy program, has been working with the extension service to produce training presentations explaining the use of renewable energy sources in agricultural applications. Taking the idea further, extension officers wanted to be able to demonstrate to the agricultural community in the state how solar power could be used to pump well water.

Jenkins, acting as a client, presented a group of mechanical engineering technology students with the problem.

"Four hundred feet is pushing the limit for solar, but technology is catching up fast.
