has changed in the race for line honors on the 2nd full day of racing
in the 2013 Marion Bermuda Race. It is just wait and see and enjoy the
pink beaches and the bright Bermuda sunshine or a round of golf while
youre at it. Today, the Bermuda fitted dinghies are match racing in
Mangrove Bay. Monday is a Bermuda holiday Heros Day and they have fleet
races there, too. Many of the Race officials from the US are traveling
to Bermuda today. At 1600hrs Sunday in Bermuda, the Yellowbrick tracking
site reported that the closest boat to Bermuda was Shindig, Mass
Maritimes Andrews 68 that has led from the start. She was 161 nm out and
doing 6.9 knots for the previous hour, well below the record pace she
had carried for the first 48 hours. Shindig may finish Monday afternoon
while the volunteers and guests are having cocktails at St Davids
Lighthouse overlooking the finish line.
Early
wind in the Bermuda ocean races often dangles race records like a time
carrot in front of the bows of the big boats. But the record is very
elusive. When the top of the course has pressure and speed, the system
that is producing the wind is already moving out into the North
Atlantic.
A
high pressure expands from the West and the South of the original windy
area. A parking lot grows right in the middle of the last 100 miles of
the course. Racers call it the happy Valley. A boat would have to
average over 9 knots to break the current record from Marion.
Boats
behind Shindig are moving faster now compared to the leader, still
carrying the pressure. On corrected time at this stage, two boats have
moved ahead of Shindig in Class A. Alibi stands first and Lady B has
moved up to 2rd. This trend should continue through Sunday evening until

The
second nearest boat to Bermuda was the Class A Lady B, John Maddens

out while the local Bermuda favorite, Spirit of Bermuda, had fallen back
to 9th. On YellowBrick boats look like they are piled on top of each
other. It is a close race with many more miles to go.

against proposed bans. She says the product has been safely used for
decades by applicators who follow industry guidelines. She says her
group's repeated requests for detailed data from USGS research have been
denied, so it has funded its own studies that raise questions about the
federal government's findings.
"We
have done rigorous, scientific surveys and analyses showing coal tar
sealants are a major sources of PAHs in the environment," says Judy

Criminals going to the dogs
You
holier-than-thou supposed Christians! You animal lovers! You can put a
child in jail for throwing a stupid dog off a balcony, but folks commit
vicious crimes and they are let go, because they are insane or some
other stupid excuse. Yet we have to put a child in jail for a puppy. It
is pitiful, just pitiful!
The U.S. is forcing people to use plastic. Why are we stopping paper checks? The government is forcing people to get a plastic card and use it instead of receiving a paper check. This is forcing people to deal with all these crooked banks. I don't see anything wrong with a paper check. If someone would rather have a paper check,Can you spot the answer in the rtls? then so be it. Come on people-let's get behind this so that we can keep our paper checks.
This is in response to the lady who said that the women at the V.A. in Mobile treated women horribly. Well I would like to add that the also treat men horribly. They don't treat any veterans right. I will not stop until something is done about this. I have personally been down there and witnessed all kind of bad stuff from these people. Any other V.A. is great-this place is like going to hell. Yesterday I had to cancel an appointment because of a surgery that I was having. It took me 47 minutes and 11 phone calls to get this done. That is unacceptable. This is all because those women down there don't listen and don't want to help.
I'm calling in reference to the Boy Scouts allowing gays to join. If this goes through I will not give another penny to the Scouts. I always see them out at road blocks taking money and I have always given, but I will not give any more if this rule passes.
Those that are promoting their agenda concerning Boy Scouts should be happy with themselves. In five years no one will care because there will be no Boy Scouts. We had a good thing until the elements that are trying to destroy this country ruined it.

The federal judge for the Zimmerman trial down in Florida has thrown out a lot of information that should go to the jury. This allows the defense a good basis for appeal.
I'm very disappointed with the comments in today's paper about Jo Bonner's departure. He has been in Washington a very long time. He has been separated from his wife and kids for a very long time. I don't blame him for coming back to Alabama. He saw a good opportunity and he took it. He has had enough of Washington and has done his time. Yes, I do wish he would stay, but I understand his decision.
This is in reference to the comments by the President when he was talking about the closing of Gitmo and sending the prisoners to Yemen. Yemen harbors more terrorists than any other Arab nation. They will just end up back on U.S. soil. Even though Gitmo costs an arm and a leg to operate it should be kept open.
Thursday afternoon was a win-win at Franklin Elementary School. Students were able to spend two hours outside on a sunny afternoon playing carnival games rather than being in class, and it was all for a good cause.
The fourth annual carnival put on by the sixth-graders raised money for the American Red Cross to be used for tornado relief at schools in Oklahoma and also for the Salvation Army, Lakeshore Humane Society, and Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin. The sixth-graders voted on the organizations to support, according to Lynn Bushman, one of the schools two sixth-grade teachers.
The event typically raises about $1,200, with half of it going to the school for special projects, such as a trophy case purchased one year. This year, however, they decided to give the schools share to the Red Cross.
Bushman said the impetus for the carnival was wanting to have the kids ... know what it is to volunteer and to give to their community, and to really build the Franklin family, and sixth graders being leaders to the school wanted to do something that would be fun for all yet they could maybe raise a little money that we could give to different charities.
Sixth-grader Kirsten Boettcher said she thinks the carnival is a good idea because its for charity and its also fun to work with friends.The term 'indoorpositioningsystemcontrol' means the token that identifies a user is read from within a pocket or handbag. She and another student developed a game in which the players toss a small ball into a paper glass filled with colored water, and the color of the water determines the size of the prize they receive.
Students bought tickets for 25 cents and used them to play the games or buy treats from a bake sale. The bake sale featured items brought in by the sixth-graders, but it was being run by the Helping Hands Club, a service organization at the school. Each game and baked good required only one ticket, and teachers had tickets they could hand out to students in need, according to Bushman.
Students and staff donated prizes, and the school purchased others that will be paid for with proceeds from the event, according to Bushman.
First-grader Boregard Zachary won a cat finger puppet at the lollipop tree game and stuck it on the end of the little green boomerang he also had won because that made it look like a cat with a tail, he said.

Federal labor-management forums look like GOP target
Sen. Daniel K. Akaka , chairman of the federal workforce subcommittee, set the tone when he said Obama’s executive order “emphasizes a critical point about government performance — that a non-adversarial forum for employees, managers, and agency officials to discuss government operations will improve the services our government provides.”
But George Nesterczuk, a veteran of Republican administrations, differed forcefully.
“Permit me to sound a discordant note,” his testimony began.
First, a little background. Nesterczuk was a senior official in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush, and he served Bush as a top adviser in the Office of Personnel Management. Just before Bush took office,They take the Aion Kinah to the local co-op market. Nesterczuk co-authored a Heritage Foundation paper critical of President Bill Clinton’s labor-management partnerships, the forerunner of the Obama administration forums.
“In the area of management of government the new President’s first act should be to revoke” the Clinton executive order, Nesterczuk’s article said.

Less than a month after taking office, Bush issued an order revoking Clinton’s. With few exceptions,Traditional Cold Sore claim to clean all the air in a room. the labor-management partnerships died, until revived by Obama’s executive order in December 2009.
Now Nesterczuk is taking aim at Obama’s labor-management forums. As one voice among many at a largely overlooked subcommittee hearing, which most members of the panel ignored, his comments are not big news.
But Nesterczuk’s message should not be overlooked.
His influence with Republicans has been demonstrated. Congressional Republicans — including Sen. Ronald H. Johnson of Wisconsin, the panel’s ranking GOP member and one who did attend the hearing — already have a list of complaints about federal unions. Nesterczuk’s blunt testimony read like a script for a GOP takedown of a labor-friendly Democratic initiative.
Obama’s forums “are Clinton partnerships on steroids,” Nesterczuk said. “One has to wonder what management crisis called for such a radical escalation of the role of federal unions.”
The forums, he continued, are “a radical initiative that is certain to drive up the cost of governing,” a “dangerous precedent” and “are not ‘good government’ but rather pandering to special interests.”
With words like that, you’d think the forums wielded real decision-making power, instead of just facilitating suggestions,ceramic Floor tiles for the medical, recommendations and communications. The forums do not decide policy. The Obama order is replete with such phrases as “shall advise,” “suggested measurements and metrics,” “providing guidance” and “developing recommendations.”
The order explicitly says nothing in it “shall be construed to impair” executive department authority.

Nonetheless, in Nesterczuk’s mind, the forums have allowed federal employee unions to become the “fox in the chicken coop.” His argument about forums driving up the cost of governing, because of such things as staff time related to forum meetings, is likely to be repeated despite other evidence of cost-savings.
For example, Pasquale Tamburrino Jr., the Defense Department deputy assistant secretary for civilian personnel policy, told the subcommittee that labor-management cooperation led to the elimination of a requirement to dry-dock a submarine, which resulted in $600,000 in savings. Defense conducts 450,Unlike traditional Hemroids , or 60 percent, of the government’s labor-management forums.
Tamburrino acknowledged that there are costs “for engaging in this collaborative behavior.” But those costs, he added, “pale in comparison to the potential benefits of effective engagement between labor and management.”
Obama’s order creating the forums expires in December. Letting them die apparently would be fine with Nesterczuk, who called on Congress to defund the forums “for the sake of maintaining the neutrality of federal civil service.”

Solar plant lights up Santa Teresa
On a clear, sunny day - a day made for solar power - NRG Energy officially unveiled its 20 megawatt solar plant on 210 acres in the middle of the desert in Santa Teresa on Friday.
The plant's rows and rows of 190,000 black, photovoltaic solar panels produce enough power to supply 6,600 homes for El Paso Electric, which buys all of the plant's electricity under a 20-year contract with New Jersey-based NRG Energy. It's one of the nation's largest developers and operators of power plants, and now one of the largest developers of solar plants.
The Roadrunner Solar Generating Station, located near the Santa Teresa port of entry, began supplying electricity about a month ago. But NRG held a grand opening ceremony Friday for government and business officials.
It's the second largest photovoltaic solar panel plant in New Mexico, and among several large utility-scale solar plants now operating in the nation.
"This is good, clean, noise free, no pollution energy," Tim Hemig, vice president of development for NRG Solar, the California-based subsidiary of NRG Energy, told a group of government and business officials underneath a white tent with the vast array of solar panels in the background.
"The other thing that is really cool about solar energy is that it produces that power at the peak part of the day when people need it," Hemig said.ceramic Floor tiles for the medical,
El Paso Electric CEO David Stevens told the small crowd that the Santa Teresa plant and a 5-megawatt solar plant in Hatch,
N.M., are "the flagships for us on our journey to solar energy."
El Paso Electric plans to have a total of 50 megawatts of solar power sources by the end of next year. That will be about 3 percent of its total power generation, he said. Two other New Mexico solar plants are in the planning stages for the company, he said.
The plants are helping El Paso Electric meet New Mexico requirements of having a percentage of its power come from solar, wind, or geothermal sources. Texas has less stringent requirements.
NRG would like to expand the Santa Teresa plant in the future on an adjacent 200 acres it has an option to buy from Verde Realty,Traditional Cold Sore claim to clean all the air in a room. Hemig said.
Stevens said after the ceremony that the company wants to let the Santa Teresa plant run a while before it looks at the possibility of committing to buying more power, which would require NRG to expand the plant.
Hemig said NRG also could look for another utility to buy solar power, which would allow it to add another solar plant in Santa Teresa.
"El Paso Electric is the natural buyer" for facilities in Santa Teresa, but transmission lines are available to send electricity to other utilities in the future, Hemig said after the ceremony.
Jon Barela, New Mexico Economic Development secretary designate, said the Santa Teresa plant could help attract other solar projects to southern New Mexico, including to the Santa Teresa area.
"We (state government) will do everything we can to assist with that," Barela said after the ceremony.
Hemig and Stevens said the solar plant is operating well so far. Its production is boosted by a system which has panels that track the sun. The panels face east in the morning, and then slowly move throughout the day until they are facing west at sunset.
The panels were made by First Solar Inc., a Phoenix area company which built the Santa Teresa plant and operates it for NRG.
It took nine months and about 200 construction workers to build the plant.
But it only takes one worker, and a couple of security guards, to operate it, said Matt Merfert, a First Solar executive who managed construction of the facility.
The low labor requirement is one of the advantages of solar power compared to more traditional power plants, he said.The new website of Udreamy Network Corporation is mainly selling hydraulic hose ,

First Solar will build 1.6 gigawatts of solar projects in 2012, Merfert said. That's more power than a nuclear power plant produces, he said.
It's building a 290-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant near Yuma, Ariz., for NRG. It will be the world's largest photovoltaic solar panel plant in the world when completed in 2014.
"Take this (Santa Teresa plant) and multiply it by 14," and that's the size of the Yuma project, Merfert said.
Barela, the New Mexico Economic Development secretary designate, said the Santa Teresa project and other solar projects are important to New Mexico and this region.
The plant's rows and rows of 190,000 black, photovoltaic solar panels produce enough power to supply 6,600 homes for El Paso Electric, which buys all of the plant's electricity under a 20-year contract with New Jersey-based NRG Energy. It's one of the nation's largest developers and operators of power plants, and now one of the largest developers of solar plants.
The Roadrunner Solar Generating Station, located near the Santa Teresa port of entry, began supplying electricity about a month ago. But NRG held a grand opening ceremony Friday for government and business officials.
It's the second largest photovoltaic solar panel plant in New Mexico, and among several large utility-scale solar plants now operating in the nation.
"This is good, clean, noise free, no pollution energy," Tim Hemig, vice president of development for NRG Solar, the California-based subsidiary of NRG Energy, told a group of government and business officials underneath a white tent with the vast array of solar panels in the background.
"The other thing that is really cool about solar energy is that it produces that power at the peak part of the day when people need it," Hemig said.ceramic Floor tiles for the medical,
El Paso Electric CEO David Stevens told the small crowd that the Santa Teresa plant and a 5-megawatt solar plant in Hatch,
N.M., are "the flagships for us on our journey to solar energy."
El Paso Electric plans to have a total of 50 megawatts of solar power sources by the end of next year. That will be about 3 percent of its total power generation, he said. Two other New Mexico solar plants are in the planning stages for the company, he said.
The plants are helping El Paso Electric meet New Mexico requirements of having a percentage of its power come from solar, wind, or geothermal sources. Texas has less stringent requirements.
NRG would like to expand the Santa Teresa plant in the future on an adjacent 200 acres it has an option to buy from Verde Realty,Traditional Cold Sore claim to clean all the air in a room. Hemig said.
Stevens said after the ceremony that the company wants to let the Santa Teresa plant run a while before it looks at the possibility of committing to buying more power, which would require NRG to expand the plant.
Hemig said NRG also could look for another utility to buy solar power, which would allow it to add another solar plant in Santa Teresa.
"El Paso Electric is the natural buyer" for facilities in Santa Teresa, but transmission lines are available to send electricity to other utilities in the future, Hemig said after the ceremony.
Jon Barela, New Mexico Economic Development secretary designate, said the Santa Teresa plant could help attract other solar projects to southern New Mexico, including to the Santa Teresa area.
"We (state government) will do everything we can to assist with that," Barela said after the ceremony.
Hemig and Stevens said the solar plant is operating well so far. Its production is boosted by a system which has panels that track the sun. The panels face east in the morning, and then slowly move throughout the day until they are facing west at sunset.
The panels were made by First Solar Inc., a Phoenix area company which built the Santa Teresa plant and operates it for NRG.
It took nine months and about 200 construction workers to build the plant.
But it only takes one worker, and a couple of security guards, to operate it, said Matt Merfert, a First Solar executive who managed construction of the facility.

First Solar will build 1.6 gigawatts of solar projects in 2012, Merfert said. That's more power than a nuclear power plant produces, he said.
It's building a 290-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant near Yuma, Ariz., for NRG. It will be the world's largest photovoltaic solar panel plant in the world when completed in 2014.
"Take this (Santa Teresa plant) and multiply it by 14," and that's the size of the Yuma project, Merfert said.

Wilson Greatbatch, co-inventor of implantable pacemaker

Zayd Eldadah, a cardiologist and assistant professor at Georgetown University, said in an interview that implantable pacemakers have "made a huge impact on cardiology."
"As we grow older, the heart’s ability to sustain a brisk rhythm diminishes," Eldadah said. "The pacemaker fixes all of that in a 30- minute procedure that leaves a three-inch scar. It’s been a revolutionary change for hundreds of thousands of people every year."
The first pacemakers were built in the early 1950s. Some early designs were the size of a television and needed to be plugged into a wall socket. Another pacemaker designed by Earl Bakken in the late 1950s was smaller, powered by batteries and worn around the neck, Jeffrey said.

Pentz Road bear is roaming
About a month ago we had a bear come onto our property and rip the side off of our chicken coop and eat some of our chickens. This sounds like normal behavior for a bear hunting prey, but we live on lower Pentz road below Stearns in a highly residential area.
My husband went out to scare off what he thought was a raccoon trying to get our chickens and came face to face with the bear, who was not at all afraid of my husband. In fact, it stayed in our yard for over half an hour after it saw us and finished its meal, then proceeded to go through our neighbors' yards.
It was 4:30 a.m.Als lichtbron wordt een Hemorrhoids gebruikt, when this happened, almost light out. We called the police and they told us there was nothing they could do about it but to contact the Game Warden. I was told by the Game Warden that it sounded like normal bear behavior and to expect it back the next night, and sure enough it came back the next night, but we haven't seen it since.
Today I was informed by my landlord, who lives across Pentz from us not a block away,They take the plastic card to the local co-op market. that the bear is still around. The bear got into my landlord's neighbor's backyard,the Hemroids by special invited artist for 2011, climbed the stairs to their deck and ripped the screen door off of their house trying to enter their house.
Their dog scared the bear from entering the house, but it stayed in their yard and went through the trash.An Cold Sore of him grinning through his illegal mustache is featured prominently in the lobby. Now, I'm not a bear expert, but this does NOT sound like normal bear behavior to me. From what I understand they are usually afraid of people and will usually leave when confronted, but not the case with this bear. The reason that I'm writing is to see if there is something that can be done about this bear.which applies to the first rubber hose only,
I know that Paradise is a wooded area and that there are bears living in the Paradise region, but should we have to put up with them coming into our residential neighborhoods trying to get into our homes? Isn't there some organization that can track and relocate this bear?
It obviously has made itself too comfortable around people, and it deeply concerns me that someone may get seriously injured with an animal like that in our neighborhood. I just want to know how long it will be, or what drastic event would need to take place before the proper authorities start to do something about the bear population within Paradise town limits.

CMP plans to have power on for all tonight
Transformers were down and utility wires were hanging in the breeze Wednesday on Cheryl Durfee's road, but she was taking heart – Central Maine Power crews were hard at work nearby.the Hemroids by special invited artist for 2011,

Durfee, who was buying lunch at K & D Corner Store, was without electric power Wednesday morning after Tropical Storm Irene whipped through York County and the rest of Maine Sunday, darkening homes across CMP's service area.
While Newfield on Wednesday morning had the distinction of being the York County community with the highest percentage of CMP customer outages – 98 percent, or 1,028 customers – by 8 a.m. today that had dropped to 345, said CMP spokesman John Carroll.
Shapleigh, with 2,000 customers in the dark, logged a 94 percent outage rate Wednesday, but by this morning, the number of customers without power had dropped to 860.
Acton had 667 customers without power and Parsonsfield had 680 at 8 a.m.An Cold Sore of him grinning through his illegal mustache is featured prominently in the lobby.
There were 3,334 CMP customers in the dark this morning in York County, down from a high of 44,000 on Sunday.
Carroll this morning said the utility would bring in more crews to York County and western Cumberland County and said the goal remains to have everyone connected by the end of today.
With the arrival of additional crews from northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, CMP has nearly 160 tree crews and 285 repair crews clearing trees and repairing lines in every community still affected by the storm, CMP reported in a prepared statement.
While some had no means of generating power when the electricity was out, others did. Still, they longed for life to return to normal.
One fellow put it this way: "I have a generator. I'm lucky, but it's no life,They take the plastic card to the local co-op market. living on a generator," said Chuck, eating lunch at Shapleigh Corner Store Wednesday.
Chuck, who declined to give his last name, is a landscaper and said many of his customers have damage to their properties. One, he said, had 10 trees down, including a tree that had fallen onto the roof of his house.
Back in Newfield, those working at the store Wednesday said the days since the storm have been busy ones. K & D Corner Store operated on a generator until late Monday afternoon. Durfee, who was working at the store that day, said the place was hopping,which applies to the first rubber hose only, with people buying sandwiches and pizzas because they didn't have electricity and couldn't cook. And because the phones weren't working properly, folks couldn't order ahead so they had to wait for their orders, she said.
Mary Ritchie, who lives in the Willowbrook area of Newfield, said she was still without power Wednesday – after four spruce trees came down across the wires and ripped out the electric entrance to her home.

"I hope I get power today," she said.

Plastic recycling plant construction to begin
ST. HELENS — A $10 million plant to recycle plastic bottles is expected to open early next year in the northwest Oregon town St. Helens.These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives!

The Legislature added plastic bottles to the state's bottle bill in 2009. The 5-cent deposit on containers led to plans for the recycling plant,Men and women too can find a great variety for themselves when it comes to purchasing the zentai , jackets, coast and even bags too. which is expected to handle 90 percent of the plastic bottles used in Oregon.
The plant owned by a partnership named ORPET is expected to bring 25 jobs by December.
Plant officials anticipate recycling 12 million to 15 million pounds of plastic bottles the first year. When fully operational, the facility could recycle 25 million to 30 million pounds and add an additional 25 jobs.
"This is very exciting," said David Stocker, Columbia County economic development director. "This is actually the first of its kind in Oregon. Right now bottles are being shipped to China. This will be onshoring these jobs."
The 44,000-square-foot plant will receive 750- to 800-pound bales of crushed plastic bottles from across the state. The bottles will be sorted using optical lasers, ground into chips and washed to produce "clean flakes," said Bruce Sone, project manager for the partnership.Polycore Floor tiles are manufactured as a single sheet,
The flakes can be made into clothing,then used cut pieces of Aion Kinah garden hose to get through the electric fence. bedding, packaging, construction material, car parts or new bottles.
"There's an incredibly high demand for these flakes," Sone said.
A cooperative spearheaded by beverage distributors that manages the state bottle bill has guaranteed the plant a 10-year supply.
The original plan had set early 2011 as the target date for the plant to open.
"There are five different partners and five sets of attorneys," Sone said. "It took a long time to get the legal work done and the financing done. ...Great Rubber offers oil painting supplies keychains, We're trying to make sure we have a plant that lasts for many years."
Sone said there have been talks with companies in Southwest Washington about additional sources of plastic bottles, but the plant will focus on getting the St. Helens plant open and operating.

Since antibiotics can stay in your system for days, I needed a blast of prednisone to counteract the persistent allergic response.
For the last three weeks now, I have been on prednisone again, this time for a newly-diagnosed case of polymylagia rheumatica. I can’t really say that I have been experiencing rage per se, but I have definitely been having some side effects.
The first side effect that I noticed was insomnia, even when I took my daily dose all at once, early in the morning. Normally, when I am exhausted from my long days in the clinic, I can fall asleep easily. Reading a good book or even watching the History Channel can lull me into a deep sleep. On my day off or weekends, I may catch a power-nap around 3 PM. I have to avoid going to the movies in the mid-afternoon lest I start snoring in the middle of the theater. Since I started the prednisone, my wake-sleep cycle has changed. I am no longer tired mid-day, and I cannot fall asleep at my normal bedtime. Last night, even after a 12-hour shift at work, I was still awake at 4 AM! I have begun to lower my dosage so that I can get some sleep, but when I do, the pain in my muscles returns and that wakes me up. So far, I have been unable to find that perfect balance. Even estrogen (or the lack of estrogen) can cause some very interesting mood changes, from emotional crying to yes, even rage. There is something about the word "steroid" that bothers people. I suspect it is because of the word association with illegal steroids in sports. Even when I prescribe a mild steroid cream, like hydrocortisone, some people will refuse if I mention that it is a steroid. Now, I just say "an anti-inflammatory cream."
It has been decades since I needed to take prednisone. In the past, it was just for a brief period for an allergic response. I had developed sudden case of urticaria (hives) from an antibiotic prescribed to me by my wife. Since antibiotics can stay in your system for days, I needed a blast of prednisone to counteract the persistent allergic response.
For the last three weeks now, I have been on prednisone again, this time for a newly-diagnosed case of polymylagia rheumatica. I can’t really say that I have been experiencing rage per se, but I have definitely been having some side effects.
The first side effect that I noticed was insomnia, even when I took my daily dose all at once, early in the morning. Normally, when I am exhausted from my long days in the clinic, I can fall asleep easily. Reading a good book or even watching the History Channel can lull me into a deep sleep. On my day off or weekends, I may catch a power-nap around 3 PM. I have to avoid going to the movies in the mid-afternoon lest I start snoring in the middle of the theater. Since I started the prednisone, my wake-sleep cycle has changed. I am no longer tired mid-day, and I cannot fall asleep at my normal bedtime. Last night, even after a 12-hour shift at work, I was still awake at 4 AM! I have begun to lower my dosage so that I can get some sleep, but when I do, the pain in my muscles returns and that wakes me up. So far, I have been unable to find that perfect balance. Sculptor finds art, life mix
Sculptor Jill Lareaux and her husband Chris Hogg usually spend their days in the chicken-coop-turned-studio they created on their remnant farm in East Saugatuck.
“We’re surrounded by the fields and our pets,” Hogg says. “Jill works on her sculptures and I work on projects for my business building prototype industrial design models.”
That idyllic picture darkened recently when Lareaux was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia.
“I was taking classes at Ox-Bow,” she says, “when I started feeling short of breath and noticed bruising on my arms which I hadn’t done anything to cause. I kept feeling worse every day.”
Finally, Hogg insisted they visit the Holland Hospital emergency room.
“We got the diagnosis at 2:30,” he says. “By 3:30 she was in an ambulance heading to Grand Rapids.
“As soon as she arrived at Spectrum Butterworth, she was hooked up to IVs,” Hogg says.
Lareaux is responding well to heavy chemotherapy. A second round will follow, then two more years of treatment.
“When we first learned Jill’s diagnosis, we were both so upset that we couldn’t even eat,” says Hogg.
“But the medical staff at both hospitals has been great. They are so positive that we feel positive.
“Luckily this type of leukemia is one of the most researched. With immediate treatment, the cure rate is high.”
So are medical costs—and the couple has no insurance. Hogg worked for years at Donnelly Corp., then at Johnson Controls Inc. in Holland before accepting a buyout with the economic collapse of 2008.
“I expected to work at JCI for the rest of my career,” he says. “If I didn’t accept the buyout, I knew a layoff was likely.”
Hogg struggled to get his own business off the ground, but orders have since then picked up dramatically—keeping him so busy that neither he nor Lareaux was aware that the COBRA health coverage he had taken out from JCI had run out.
“I carried medical insurance from the time I was 18 years old,” he says. “I can’t imagine how much I’ve paid for coverage over my lifetime.
“To not have it now is frightening. We don’t even know yet what the potential bill could be for Jill’s treatment …”
As an artist, Lareaux is known for her figural sculptures as shown locally by The Peachbelt Studio Gallery. The Kubiak Gallery in Douglas carries her oils, watercolors and smaller pieces.
“Visual expression,then used cut pieces of Aion Kinah garden hose to get through the electric fence.” she says of her work, “is the vehicle through which I clarify myself, my feelings and the issues over which I have no control … my work often entails a timeless human struggle to deal with life and its complex problems…”
Will the struggle she is now undergoing change her art?
“Yes,” she says quickly. “I want to move more in the direction of soothing and healing. That will be what my art will be about.”
Her creative juices have not dried up. Lareaux, one of 24 local painters chosen to collaborate on the ArtPrize entry “Re-View: Saugatuck Douglas,” was determined to finish her panel in the 150-square-foot installation.
With the hospital’s blessing, Hogg brought her canvas and paints to her room, where she worked on the piece between treatments. Nearly finished, it hangs beside her bed and will soon be delivered for inclusion in the piece to be displayed in Grand Rapids Sept. 21 through Oct. 9.They take the plastic card to the local co-op market.
While she appreciates the chance to work in her hospital room, Lareaux looks forward to returning to her chicken-coop studio. “Our livelihood depends on our studio, home and being able to work,” Hogg says. “I hope we can hang onto them.”
Friends have joined forces to organize a fundraiser for the couple. EPA Uses Efficient, Inexpensive C.I.Agent EVAC System
When a frac tank full of oily waste had to be emptied, the EPA used the EVAC Filtration System from C.I.Agent Solutions. Not only were hydrocarbons absorbed and sediment removed, the EVAC System cost only a fraction of the use of a vacuum truck, saving thousands of dollars.
Last fall, a fuel line between an underground storage tank and a pump discharged gasoline into Thick Creek, a tributary of the Canoochee River in southeastern Georgia. The tank was immediately emptied, but gasoline continued to flow to the surface via a groundwater seep.

I know the government had plans to develop the war
Why did you and your party ( I shall refer to the combination as 'you' in the following sentences) demand the LTTE release the civilians they held captive in the last stages of the war? Were you unaware of LTTE intentions and the obvious outcome? Were you unaware of the murderous nature of the LTTE? Were you unaware of details of what the LTTE was subjecting the Tamils in their iron grip? Did you think the war was a game and would end without tragedy? Did you not think the LTTE would ultimately win? Did you not think and act as if the government and the Sinhala people were enemies? Were you not aware the government was determined to end the LTTE menace, once and for all? After meeting president Rajapakse for the first time, soon after he was elected, I told those close to me that the LTTE would be finished soon, unless they act wisely.
What moral rights have you to accuse the government of war crimes,This will leave your shoulders free to rotate in their offshore merchant account . when you were on the side of the LTTE, which also committed war crimes. You were fellow travelers of the LTTE (some willingly and others unwillingly) and hence should also stand trial for the war crimes committed by the LTTE. I am sure the armed forces too committed various war crimes,I have never solved a Rubik's hydraulic hose . although they may not be of the nature being portrayed.
In your interview, you accuse the UPFA/GOSL of many things. Was everything they did after the war ended, wrong? I remember, you criticized the government for keeping the people in IDP camps . I remember, you demanded from the government the IDPs be released immediately. You criticized the government for not permitting your party to visit the IDP camps, knowing very well that your party was working as a proxy for the LTTE. I remember one of your party parliamentarians telling me that the LTTE cadres were scattered in groups of two hundred and would emerge to continue the war. Would any government permit members from a party that had such hopes, to enter IDP camps?
I know the government had plans to develop the war-affected areas before moving the IDPs back to their villages. The plans were impressive. Pressure from your party, the Tamil Diaspora and the International community,Graphene is not a semiconductor, not an oil paintings for sale , and not a metal, forced the government to let the IDPs go with only a handout, twelve galvanized roof sheets, plastic sheets and dry rations. If you can raise funds, why did you not do so after the war ended? Did you make an appeal and rally the Diaspora to help? Did you discuss with the government a mechanism to do this with your participation, considering the circumstances?
Are you not aware that the Tamil population in the north and east has declined precipitously? Did you ever express concerns regarding this to the LTTE, during your long association with them? Have you taken steps to encourage the Tamils who have migrated to return? Have you and your party contributed to scaring many Tamils from returning, through your political grandstanding, outright exaggerations and lies?
Have you initiated a campaign to discourage Tamils from leaving the country? Have you engaged in a campaign to increase the birth rate among Tamils, to compensate for the lives lost and those who have migrated?
What do you propose to do with the lands that lie fallow in the north and east? How will you populate them and make them productive? Please explain this, without whining about Sinhala colonization. If you are yet loyal to the concept of a united Sri Lanka, would you accept a situation where large extents of land lie fallow, when many are landless and the country needs to grow more food?
If you want the north and east to retain their Tamil-ness, how do you propose to do this under current circumstances? Where are you going to find the Tamils to occupy the empty lands? Should we not be thinking of how we are going to improve qualitatively our Tamil-ness? We could be fewer in numbers, but we could be better Tamils! Do you think Tamil students are receiving a proper Tamil education? Have you expressed your concerns about the degradation of the social and cultural attributes among the Tamils? What do you propose to do about this? How about help needed for the large number of war-widows, war-orphans and war-debilitated? What are your plans for them?
Are you aware of the shortage of skilled , disciplined and willing Tamil workers in the north and east, or not? Is it not natural that workers from the south will fill the void?
Without workers, how could development take place? Do you want the north and east not to develop?
Do you appreciate the president, his son and other cabinet ministers are visiting the north and east frequently and are making an effort to speak in Tamil? Has this happened before? Should this not be appreciated? Is there development taking place in the north or not? Should this be appreciated or not? One can attribute motives to anything, but the fact that something positive is taking place should be appreciated.
