Thousands without power, flooding danger remains high

Despite weakening to a tropical storm from its peak as a category 3 hurricane, Irene hit New Hampshire hard Sunday, with heavy rain and wind knocking out power to more than 160,000.

The fire

Seven people are homeless after separate fires early Saturday in West Penn Township and Adamsdale.

The first fire was reported about 3:45 a.m. at 38 Applejack Lane, West Penn Township, where flames spread from a garage to an attached home.

West Penn Township Fire Chief Dennis Fritzinger said the home's occupants escaped safely thanks to a little help. "The family dog actually alerted the family of the fire,' Fritzinger said.

The fire, which left five people homeless, was brought under control in about one hour, Fritzinger said. The home was destroyed due to smoke and water damage, he said, adding that he believes the cause of the fire was electrical. However, an investigation continues.

According to the Schuylkill Parcel locator, the home is owned by Ron and Margaret Wehr.

Fritzinger said the Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing.

Assisting West Penn Township firefighters at the scene were crews from Mahoning Township, New Ringgold, Walker Township, East Penn Township and Lehighton.

At 6 a.m. Saturday, fire personnel were dispatched to 25 W. Adamsdale Road for a structure fire.

Matthew Croneberger was sleeping in the living room of the single home he shares with Krystal Hill when he heard a noise on the second floor.

"I heard a boom that woke me up and then another boom," Croneberger said Saturday. Hill said the home is owned by Randy Drobnick. She said the couple did not have renters insurance.

Church fits solar panels to generate green power

A LEDBURY church is going green after having more than 50 solar panels installed on its roof, making it more self-sufficient and saving money at the same time.

Fifty-four solar panels have been installed at St Michaels and All Angels, and are now generating electricity for the building.

On Monday, May 9, at 11am, the Bishop of Hereford the Rt Rev Anthony Priddis will be hoisted up to the roof to bless the new panels.

Team rector the Rev Paul Dunthorne said: “We’re hiring a cherry-picker, and all being well, will be lifting the bishop up to view and dedicate the panels, which should be quite a sight.”

There are 18 modules installed on the roof of the north aisle and 36 modules installed on the south aisle, with a maximum power output of 9.9 kilowatts peak power, according to suppliers Clear Focus.

One of the clinching factors was that the panels could be fitted to the roof of the 12th-century church while remaining invisible from below.
