TAU students commemorate Palestinian Nakba

A crowd of a few hundred amassed in front of Tel Aviv University to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the Palestinian “Nakba,” or disaster, which refers to certain consequences of the establishment of the State of Israel: the destruction of an estimated 622 villages and the exodus of roughly 700,000 Palestinians who became permanent refugees.

A mosaic crowd of progressive and left-wing students—both Jews and Arabs—listened to activists announce the names of destroyed villages, recite the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish, and deliver speeches aboutAnother Chance to buymosaic (MOS) 0 comments. the urgent need for reconciliation, equality, and social justice.

The commemoration was not without opposition: a rabble of right-wing protesters, most of which belong to the rabid organization Im Tirtzu, counter protested. “I killed four people bigger than you,” one Im Tirtzu demonstrator said to Mohammad, a 20 year-old Palestinian student of American Culture and Archeology.

“Death to Arabs!” a faction of the Im Tirtzu crowd later chanted.

One man slipped past the barriers and attempted to tear a large sign from the activists who were holding it. “Nakba 1948,” the sign read in Arabic, Hebrew, and English. He lunged at a commemorator and a small scuffle ensued before the security officers apprehended him.

“Listen,UK chickencoop Specialist. it’s not like we are asking Jews to leave—there are Jews demonstrating here with us,” one of the organizers of the commemoration told me. “We want to recognize the loss of our villages and the displacement of our families who came from there.”

A graduate student named Mohammed, who is studying towards a Masters of Business Administration, echoed similar themes. “We want a secular, democratic state for everyone, with equality for Jews, Christians,The concept of indoorpositioningsystem (RTLS) is fast catching up in industries. and Muslims.” Such a state, he told me, must include the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The Nakba commemoration and counter-protest are a microcosm of the broader struggle taking place within Israeli-Palestinian society. A steadily growing Israeli right-wing movement is attempting to command a monopoly on historical narrative. Their opponents, an Israeli-Palestinian left that many had announced dead and buried long ago, continue to executing a joint struggle, despite the inattention of the international media.

The Israeli state and its staunchest supporters decry each demand for equality as an assault on its very existence. Peace activists are persecuted and often physically assaulted by state security forces. Meanwhile, West Bank settlers—citing a religious-colonial ideology as the warrant for the continued theft of Palestinian land—generally enjoy legal immunity.

The Second Intifada is often referred to as a setback for the left-wing movements in Israeli and Palestinian societies. The high frequency of violence and the religious undertones led many to brand the Israeli-Palestinian peace camp as naive at best, or a fifth column at worst.

Discontent with the state, however, is stirring again, and the left is seizing the opportunity.

Palestinians living inside the Green Line—along with many Israeli Jews, for that matter—reject the government’s classification of Arabs as second class citizens. To expect the over one million Palestinians citizens of Israel to endorse an exclusively Jewish state that renders them mere footnotes is nothing short of absurd.

Their demands are not inherently violent or destructive, as their detractors say. Rather, the overwhelming majority are calling for a secular and democratic state that does not treat its citizens preferentially according to religion or ethnicity.

'Iowa nice' comes with its own cuisine

Think about it. Rather than taking time to get to know a person or a place or a thing on its merits, a stereotype allows us to simply make sweeping generalizations that exaggerate certain qualities while ignoring facts that contradict what we already “know” to be true.

Take the recent kerfuffle known as the Iowa caucuses. The caucuses are rife with stereotype as presidential hopefuls — and the national media talking heads forced to follow them — fall all over themselves trying to find those “perfect” Iowa images to serve as a backdrop for the stories they want to tell. These folks don’t need to find the “real” Iowa. If you’re a candidate, it’s as simple as getting your photo taken at the nearest Pizza Ranch shaking hands with the “locals.”

The problem is that the picture of Iowa — or any state — cannot be captured in a 30-second sound bite or even a 6,000 word online essay. That’s where stereotypes come in so handy. You don’t have to actually understand Iowa. Just throw out a bunch of images about church suppers and combine demolition derbies and everyone gets the joke. And if they don’t, who cares? Just label it “satire” and it’s all good.

But apparently not everyone got the memo about Iowa stereotypes. Comedian Jon Stewart, who as host of the fake news show “The Daily Show” knows a few things about satire, described the Iowa caucuses as one of those events that gives us “a deeper understanding of our connection to our representative democracy.Tru-Form Plastics is a one-stop shop for plastic Injection Molding,” That’s not your typical sound bite.

Then there are those “Iowa Nice” guys. Des Moines filmmakers Scott Siepker and Paul Benedict, recently created a short video called “Iowa Nice” that has gotten more than 800,000 hits on Youtube. The film, which is narrated by Siepker, skewers several well-known Iowa stereotypes with a few facts about our state’s progressive history and economic prowess.

But it is Siepker’s tone that most defies the typical Iowa image. That’s also true for food. The stereotypical Midwestern cuisine is the casserole, aka the hot-dish for those of you from the northern tier of the state. In his now infamous piece, “Observations from 20 Years of Iowa Life,” University of Iowa professor Stephen Bloom claims that casseroles — along with Jell-O molds — are the foods most likely to be served at wedding receptions and funerals in Iowa.

And so what if casseroles are stereotypical? Casseroles are one of America’s (not just Iowa’s) great comfort foods. They are warm, hearty and easy to make. Are there bad ones out there? Sure. But there are more than a few wonderful ones, too. Nor do all of them rely on a can of cream of mushroom soup or Doritos nacho cheese tortilla chips.

In truth, there are as many casseroles in Iowa as there are kernels of corn. I’ve included a few of them below. They vary in complexity from the incredibly simple to the slightly more time consuming. Whichever you choose, however, they are sure to defy the stereotype, and they are the very definition of “Iowa Nice.”

A son searches for his mother

Kelly McCleary stared at his sandwich and left his juice untouched. We were sitting in a coffee shop on a cold bright morning. He was exhausted. His heart was sore.

His mother is missing.

She has schizophrenia. He thinks she is on the street again. He can’t find her and isn’t sure where to look.

He said, “She was in public housing. She’d been paying rent for seven years. She got one of those evictions; noise.” I shuddered.

She was evicted in August. “She’s had schizophrenia for years. She yells sometimes at night.This page contains information about molds, I tried to see her once a week; most of the times she’d be okay, but there’d be outbursts.”

Outbursts? “It’s hard to deal with; she thinks all kids my age are her babies. I’m an only child.”

Kelly is 24 years old. At one time, both his parents were homeless. They separated years ago. He was raised, well and thoughtfully, by his grandmother.

After the eviction, Kelly said, “I tried to find her a place. A women’s hostel agreed to pick her up on the day. I was there, but no one from the hostel showed up.

“I found her on the street outside her place with nothing; just the clothes on her back, and a bag of stuff — no purse, no coat, no ID, no hat. I asked her what happened.

“She said they came to kick her out; the cops, and someone from housing. I called the hostel to find out what happened. They said there were no real plans to pick her up on the day.

“I took her to a shelter on Broadview where she’d been before. I was trying to get her booked in when she ran off.” He ran after her, but she disappeared.

He called his dad, who has issues of his own. They went to all the places they thought she might go; they eventually learned that she went back to her building and slept in the laundry room for a time.

Kelly said, “I was thinking it was my fault, letting her run off.” No, Kelly, not your fault.

The cops found her, though,We are passionate about polished tiles. and took her to a hospital. “They got her stabilized and I got things in motion so she’d be able to go to her original destination, the hostel. I took her by cab and got her signed in. Then I went for a walk to get familiar with the area.”

But because it was a women’s hostel, and because he is a man, he had trouble connecting with his mother. She took off again a couple of weeks ago.

He is certain she’s on the street again. That’s her in the photo. Her name is Deborah.

Puss in Boots

The Shrek series is resurrected once again for this amiable, action-packed - if less than purr-fect - 3D spin-off, featuring everyone’s favourite diminutive swashbuckler.A long established toolmaking and trade Injection moulds company. After his summer stint as a maniacal plastic surgeon (in Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In), Antonio Banderas is back voicing the titular cat, wielding a more familiar (though considerably less threatening) blade. He is joined in his adventures by nimble puss Kitty Softpaws (Catwoman if she were actually a cat). Kitty is voiced, not terribly zestily, by Salma Hayek. Given its Latin lover leads and sizzling location it won’t be a surprise to hear that Puss in Boots amps up the innuendo. In fact it begins wittily with Puss sneaking out on a conquest, desperate not to rouse her sleeping owner; he tells us, “What can I say? I was a bad kitty”.

Puss also gets his own comedy foil in the slightly hideous Humpty Dumpty (current go-to comic sidekick Zach Galifianakis, above with Kitty and Puss), his childhood friend who betrayed and disgraced him and who has returned with a plan to redeem them both. The plan involves the hijacking of magic beans which are currently in the possession of seemingly bad-ass bandits Jack and Jill (Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris, below right). As the fairytale goes, once planted these beans will grow into a towering beanstalk, leading to a castle in the sky and to the goose who lays the golden eggs.

As you’ll be able to tell from that, Puss in Boots - like the Shrek films before it - is an amalgam which combines fairytales, nursery rhymes, film references (including a not terribly funny Fight Club nod) and the occasional original idea. This mash-up movie, directed by Shrek the Third’s Chris Miller, is only so-so in the story department and, so desperate is it to adhere to the (tired) Shrek formula, it often feels hurriedly Pritt-Sticked together. It might have been better off as a fully fledged animated western, in the mould of the imaginative and lovable Rango.

As Puss, Antonio Banderas continues to show his talent as a voice-actor. This is not remotely a given for Hollywood stars and the increasing reliance on big names to voice animated pictures has produced some mixed results. Scituate teacher expresses frustration at state of Gates building

The abundance of building problems lingering throughout the Gates Intermediate School found their way before the school committee once again at Monday night’s meeting, Nov. 7.

In response to school committee Chairman Michael Hayes review of the cost and estimated scope of work for the Scituate High auditorium project, Shan Morrissey, a special education teacher at Gates, said she and other teachers were frustrated at the committee’s decision to renovate the auditorium.

Hayes said Gates has been a priority of the school committee for a while now. Some great scientific discoveries are the culmination of vast amounts of work carried out over long periods of time by many different people.

Others are truly "Eureka" moments which come out of the blue.

On the morning of April 8, 1982, the Israeli chemist Dan Shechtman wrote "10-fold???" in his notebook.

Little did he know this annotation would lead to a Nobel Prize 29 years later for "the discovery of quasicrystals".

As (hopefully) every schoolkid knows, all matter can be classified into one of three phases: solid, liquid or gas.

Solids are distinguished by the fact that their constituent atoms are fixed firmly in place and, in contrast to those in liquids and gases, cannot move about freely.

We can further subdivide solids into two groups, crystalline and amorphous, depending on whether or not the atoms (or ions) in the solid form ordered, repeating patterns in three dimensions.

Examples of amorphous solids are soot and glass - in both of these substances, there is no such order of the atoms.

Common household substances such as sodium chloride (salt) and sucrose (sugar) are crystalline and the regular arrangement of atoms and ions leads to beautifully-shaped crystals with which I'm sure you are familiar.

He was also pilloried by the scientific establishment, with one of his fiercest critics being the Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling.

The first time he tried to publish this result, the manuscript was rejected and it took more than two years to get the work into print.

Eventually, however, Shechtman was shown to be correct, and examples of crystalline substances with 5-fold, 8-fold, 12-fold and 18-fold symmetry are now known.

Crystalline substances displaying these unusual symmetries are called quasicrystals, because while they display short-range symmetry, there is no long-range repetition of the pattern, a situation once thought impossible.

Indeed, thanks to Shechtman's discovery, the scientific definition of a crystal was changed in 1992 to incorporate quasicrystals.

Kenya Help project grows leaps and bounds

A former Smiths Falls resident is making a world of difference halfway around the globe in the village of Ngong, Kenya.
Nancy Stevens – who started the Kenya Help Project,the worldwide microinverter market is over $56 billion annually. a non-profit organization, after visiting Kenya in 2008 – said her organization is enjoying its most successful year.
"It's been incredible," she said. "I really feel like I've found my wings now."
She began visiting African countries in 2005, while volunteering in Zambia with Habitat for Humanities International.
Her work in Kenya began her work with the children at the Sidai Rehabilitation Centre for orphans.
The project – which began with her helping out one orphanage in Ngong, Kenya – now assists three orphanages and a primary school.

"I ate corn from the garden I planted my last trip," she said. "They now have 14 different crops growing."
In previous trips to Ngong, Stevens was able to build a classroom, teach malaria prevention, purchase malaria nets, install a playground and security gates, build a chicken coop and plant an acre-and-a-half of crops.

She said she plans on building a cookhouse for the Kibiko Primary School, a school in Ngong that holds approximately 800 children.
During a recent trip to the school, Stevens said she noticed many of the children passing out or sleeping. When she inquired about the issue, she said the head mistress told her the kids were passing out due to starvation.
Stevens said she hopes to raise enough money to provide one meal a day for all 800 children, as well as hire a local cook and build a cookhouse.we supply all kinds of Injection mold,

She said she is currently estimating the cost of the project. Stevens said she has already received some positive feedback from her talk of building the cookhouse.
"I already have volunteers on board ready to build it," she said. "It's exciting to know that this is my plan… I can't to go back and build this cookhouse."

Stevens said her organization's assistance has provided more than basic necessities for survival.
"I've been able to give people jobs," she said. "They gain a sense of responsibility and respect in their community."
She said she has a foreman whom she pays to work with her on the organization's projects.
"Every day we are in contact with each other," she said. "I can go anywhere in the village and I can get things done."
To help let people know where their donations are being spent, Stevens has also provided daily videos uploaded to the website to show people the work she does.

She said she had to stop uploading videos temporarily, but they will be back on the website by early October.
March-ing back to Kenya
Stevens said she hopes to make it back to Ngong next March. She said she already misses her home away from home.
"I flew home after my 40th birthday," she said. "I remember, it took two or three days after I got over my jet lag, literally after a week I wanted to go back."

Stevens said she hopes to make presentations and speak at as many schools as possible this year.
Kids World, a magazine featured in schools across Ontario, featured Stevens and Kenya Help in its September issue. Stevens said she was happy to be featured in the September issue, since it is the month when most schools decided which charities they will assist.

Plastic recycling plant construction to begin

ST. HELENS — A $10 million plant to recycle plastic bottles is expected to open early next year in the northwest Oregon town St. Helens.These girls have never had a cube puzzle in their lives!

The Legislature added plastic bottles to the state's bottle bill in 2009. The plant owned by a partnership named ORPET is expected to bring 25 jobs by December.

Plant officials anticipate recycling 12 million to 15 million pounds of plastic bottles the first year. When fully operational, the facility could recycle 25 million to 30 million pounds and add an additional 25 jobs.

"This is very exciting," said David Stocker, Columbia County economic development director. "This is actually the first of its kind in Oregon. Right now bottles are being shipped to China. This will be onshoring these jobs."

The 44,000-square-foot plant will receive 750- to 800-pound bales of crushed plastic bottles from across the state. Newberry was the catalyst behind bringing single-stream recycling to the town and he emphasized during his presentation that there is value in the recycled items when they are in bulk.
