Dry start to Utah winter may bug you later

That's right. According to bug experts, without some significant snowfall soon, the result could be an infestation of bugs normally killed off by cold winter temperatures.

"Cold weather is one of the things that seem to knock them back," said John Mull, a Weber State University zoology professor who's an expert on insects. "If we start spring with higher numbers, they could build up to unprecedented levels."

Mull cited current issues with bark beetles consuming large numbers of trees throughout the western United States as an example of what could happen when pest insect populations explode.

"Insect pests that normally get killed off could be around in large numbers," said Barb Wachocki, chairwoman of the botany department at Weber State University. "Something like that could happen. ... It could have a huge impact on plants."

Because of plant hormones and other factors,As a leading company in the plastic card printing industry, Wachocki said she is far less worried about the direct effect on plants from unseasonably warm weather than she is about the insects.

But Mull said the warm weather pattern also could have a devastating effect on some six- and eight-legged creatures.

A host of warm-temperature records have been set last week in various locations throughout the state, and the usual air inversion for this time of year also appears to be all but nonexistent.

The cause, say weather experts, is a lack of snow so far this season combined with a high-pressure system.

Marty Booth, a meteor-ologist with the Utah Climate Center, said last week's particularly warm weather with a handful of high-temperature records has been due to "large-scale high-pressure ridges that have been over the West."

The ridges have kept storms away from Utah, Nevada and much of Colorado, he said.

But what's most important to understand, he said, is that the temperatures have stayed warm because of a lack of snow.

Dan Bedford, a Weber State University geography professor who has studied long-term climate change, pointed to a La Nina pattern over the equatorial Pacific Ocean as the cause of recent trends.

"We just have to blame it on high pressure," said Rick Ford, a professor in the geosciences department at Weber State University. "We just need the high-pressure cell to blow away. It has happened before. It will happen again. It's part of the variability in this thing we call weather."

And weather variables also could serve as a protection, Wachocki said.

Weather and climate experts who were interviewed all said a few weeks of unseasonably warm weather are not indications of global warming and shouldn't be cause for concern by itself.

He urges people to wait before they get worked up over a lack of snowfall.

"We are behind, but with any luck, we will catch up later in the season," Ford said. "Dry years and drought are common."

But Wachocki and others did say they have seen other indications that the planet is getting warmer.

"It is happening in a lot of places where the flowers start to come up and bloom earlier," Wachocki said. "If the pollinators are not out, it could have an effect on seed production."

Bedford said weather patterns are something that must be studied over a long period of time. He said last winter sported a warmer period at about this same time as well, which was followed by a record-breaking wet spring.

But he said, over time, there does seem to be a "little bit of a trend toward slightly warm winters in the western United States."

Peace Park rooster relocated to chicken farm

The rooster, who had been living in the park since May, was caught Sunday morning and transferred to a hobby chicken farm outside city limits. Fans of the bantam rooster had worried about how the critter would survive the snow and ice of winter in Columbia.

Summer Allen, a retired psychologist who had been feeding the rooster daily, helped organize the rescue mission. After a warm and rainy November, Central Indiana has seen more of the same in the first week of December.

Tips was innovator in funeral industry

Prior to co-owning Mission Park Funeral Chapels and Cemeteries, Frederick Tips served as a test pilot in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

“He would test fly planes that needed to be overhauled, repaired and modified for combat,” grandson Barcley Houston said. “He was greatly mechanically inclined. There was nothing he couldn't fix or build.”

Tips shared his skills by penning fix-it manuals that included pictorials for pilots to repair their downed aircrafts if they experienced mechanical failures.

Tips decided to create a safer version of the buggy that had a hose and hydraulic pump and acted like a dump truck.

Tips was often found donning a groundskeeper uniform, roaming the property looking for anything that needed fixing. But he could just as quickly shift into professional attire and interact with families.

“My grandfather had a very endearing, compassionate and loving personality,” Houston said. “He was the face of the company.”

Higher sidewalls increase air volume in the building diluting the moisture and gases in the barn. It also allows more wind exposure. The preferred sidewall height is 14 to 16 feet with 12 feet being the bare minimum. "We want to maintain around 11 square feet per cow opening," said McFarland, "Six-row barns are challenged here." Like endwalls, sidewalls should be adjustable. "During summer we want the walls to be open at cow level allowing fresh air to her while providing shade," stated McFarland, "During winter we want to block cold winds at cow level, protect her from precipitation and provide quality air."

In winter, the temperature inside the building should be about 5 to 10 degrees warmer than outside. Anything higher than this causes gas and condensation build-up compromising air quality. Council to weigh in beekeeping regulations

The Corte Madera Town Council will hold a public hearing Dec. 6 to discuss the Planning Commission’s proposals on the regulation of beekeeping and chicken coops within town limits.

The commission has held three public workshops on the matter, which was brought to the town’s attention when a resident complained that a neighbor’s beekeeping posed a physical threat. The incident briefly made national news and was debated during the workshops.

“The Planning Commission asked for more information and analysis,” said Corte Madera Planning Director Dan Bell after the conclusion of the second workshop. “We will also redraft a set of standards.”

The proposed regulations, based on a staff report, are fairly loose. “The Planning Commission felt that there should be only minimal regulations and/or standards for non-commercial keeping of honey bees and chickens,” the report states.

As for beehives, parcels a quarter-acre or smaller could have only two colonies. Properties up to an acre in size could house four colonies and lots bigger than an acre could have eight colonies, according to commission recommendations.

When President Barack Obama visited Solyndra in May 2010, then-CEO Chris Gronet gave him a personal tour in what was the high point of the young startup's meteoric rise.

But behind the scenes, Solyndra was mired in trouble. Gronet, a veteran Silicon Valley technologist who founded the company, had quietly been stripped of many of his executive duties, and Solyndra's board of directors was searching for his replacement.

Little more than a year after Obama's visit, Solyndra filed for bankruptcy, throwing more than 1,000 employees out of work and igniting a fierce debate about the role of government in supporting clean-energy companies.

Two Solyndra executives were called to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee -- both invoked their Fifth Amendment right to not incriminate themselves -- but Gronet so far has escaped the spotlight. But documents released by congressional investigators and interviews with former Solyndra employees indicate that he, more than any other individual, is responsible for the company's sudden rise and spectacular fall.

Gronet founded Solyndra in 2005 and personally pushed for its $535 million loan guarantee from the Department of Energy, which was used to build a new 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility along Interstate 880.
