Vermont Dairies Scramble to Find Feed After Irene

While the Aug. 28 storm flooded only 6,000 of the state's 92,000 acres of feed corn, the water was concentrated in certain areas, hitting farmers there hard. Vermont Agriculture Secretary Chuck Ross said the feed shortage is adding to hardship already suffered in the storm that killed six and damaged more than 500 miles of roads, damaged or destroyed dozens of bridges and inundated several communities. Ross estimated in September that crop losses and damage to farms exceed $10 million. A final tally is still being determined.

"It's going to put them under strain," Ross said, referring to the farmers who need to find replacement feed. "I mean they're already under strain."

Most farmers will need feed until May or June, when cows can graze again. If they keep their cows in barns year-round, they'll need feed until next fall.

Even if farmers get all the feed they need, they aren't in the clear. The state has encouraged all of its 1,000 or so dairy farmers to test stored corn for mycotoxins, which thrive in damp conditions. Mycotoxins are molds that can make cows sick and one found in warmer climates is considered a carcinogen.

The University of Vermont Extension recently opened a testing lab to provide quick and free screening of feed.

David Ainsworth, 57, of South Royalton, typically grows all the corn and hay for his 50 cows, but this year, he lost most of his corn. He bought eight acres worth of corn at a cost of $50 to $55 per ton, but then he got hay free from a neighbor.

Mum bids to drive out ‘stinking’ bus shelter

A CONCERNED resident has called for action to be taken at a bus shelter next to her home, which she claims is a haunt for anti-social behaviour and is causing damage to her own property.

Mother-of-three Nicola Wimbush said the structure along Hadston Road, in South Broomhill, is being used as a ‘teenage den’, which stinks of ‘stale urine’ and is often targeted by graffiti vandals.

She has also complained that rain water is running off the structure’s roof and coming into her property.

Mrs Wimbush has written to East Chevington Parish Council requesting help, asking members to change the shelter’s design or even grant permission to remove it.

After the meeting, Mrs Wimbush said the majority of bus shelter users did not cause a problem.

Council chairman Scott Dickinson said that a site meeting would be held at the shelter and the parish council would look at what can be done to rectify some of the problems but said the shelter couldn’t be removed.

He added that transparent bus shelters have been subject to vandalism in the village and told members that both the parish and the county council regularly clean the shelters in the village, as well as cleaning the graffiti.

Instead of using joysticks, the Scout uses a map-based, touch-screen interface that allows new users to pilot the system in just minutes. The Scout essentially flies itself, allowing the operator to focus on acquiring imagery, Aeryon Labs said.

The Scout has four rotors, each powered by a brushless DC electric motor, ensuring nearly silent operation. The vehicle can operate up to 3 km from the user, with a designed operational altitude above ground level of 300–500 feet at flying speeds of up to 50 km/h. It can tolerate winds of up to 80 km/h.
