Cars
at Maker Faire range from the exotic - the hovercraft built to look
like a DeLorean and powered by a lawnmower motor - to the experimental -
CalSol is a solar-powered electric car that looks like a cross between a
landspeeder and a stealth bomber. Rather more practical was the BMW
converted to run on electricity, with a 100 mile range. Electric Motor
Werks did the conversion, and it's also come up with two charging
stations, both built with Arduino hardware. The 12kw EMW SmartCharge
12000 charges a car in three hours, and the lower-powered EMW JuiceBox
will be available as a Kickstarter project.
If
you want to put your own designs on clothing, Lumi is a new kind of
fabric dye that develops in sunlight like a photograph - but unlike
photographic chemicals, they're not dangerous to have around, and unlike
silkscreen printing you don't need to cut out a stencil. You spread the
dye - which comes in several colours - onto the fabric then put a
negative of your design on top and leave it in bright light for 30
minutes. Once it's exposed, you wash off the dye and you have a
permanent print. In a couple of weeks, Lumi will have an iPhone app that
converts your photos to negatives and sends them to Lumi to print on a
sheet of acetate that you can reuse to print as many witty T shirts as
you want.
If
you want to put a tiny satellite in orbit, you can do it - for a few
weeks at least. KickSat and NanoSatisfi ArduSat are projects that enable
you to design a very small satellite and have it sent into space on one
of the SpaceX flights that takes supplies to the International Space
Station. The satellite will drop out of orbit and burn up in the
atmosphere after a month or so, but until then they'll run the

Only
30% of what a candle radiates is light; 70% of the energy is wasted as
heat. We already love the $69 tPOD1, a giant heat sink that sits over a
candle and uses it to power an LED light that's much brighter than the
tea light itself (using the Peltier effect). At Maker Faire, Biolite
showed off a $130 camping stove that burns twigs and charges your phone
at the same time. It converts some of the heat from the fire into
electricity that drives a fan that makes the fire more efficient - and
puts out 5V of 2W power from the USB port on the side. And you can still
boil water and roast marshmallows on it.
There
was more 3D printing at Maker Faire than almost anything else. There
wasn't just a variety of machines claiming to be the fastest, the most
accurate or the cheapest ($300 rather than the usual $3,000) but there
were also many different suppliers of 3D printing materials. Most 3D
printing is done with filaments of ABS plastic that come on large reels
(unless you have a specialist machine that can use materials like
metal). But what do you do when you get bored of a 3D-printed object or
when your design doesn't come out the way you hoped? The OmNom Project
is building a 3D recycling system that will shred unwanted 3D printing
and extrude it as filament you can use to print something else.
If
you want to build your own furniture, canoe, submarine or garden dome
(just a few of the projects on display at maker Faire), you need a
precision cutting system such as a computer-controlled CNC router. Most
of those are large machines that have to be permanently installed.
ShopBot's new $2,500 Handibot is a portable CNC system that you can
control from a PC or smartphone to cut, drill, machine and carve wood
and metal or engrave patterns on metal and glass. If you want to cut
paper, card and balsa wood, the Otherlabs Othercutter is a milling
machine that controls a craft knife. Precision tools are getting small
and cheap enough that pretty soon, you'll be buying them at the DIY
store instead of a saw.
Arduino
launched two new products. Yn is a $69 Wi-Fi-enabled motherboard with
an embedded Linux-based access point (based on the Linino distribution)
that you can program over the network for making sensors for internet of
things. It's also launched a $279 robot kit, which is the first time
Arduino has gone into robotics. The robot kit includes two Leonardo
boards with wheels plus a compass, line-following sensors, speakers and a
small screen that guides you through the dozen different projects you
can build. You can also add extra sensors, such as an infrared remote
control.
"In
the same way an Arduino board opens up the world of electronics, we
want to open up the world of robotics," said Arduino founder Massimo
Banzi. The carefully designed packaging and the details of the projects
you can make are also a new development for Arduino. "We spent a lot of
time on the user experience, on what happens when you take it out of the
box. We worked on how short the time can be between you taking it our

Parallels in Teaching and Parenting
Sandra, my two year-old-daughter, has a wooden puzzle in front of her
with a series of doors. Behind the doors sit magnetized objects, each
corresponding to the image painted on the front: the cow rests in the
barn, the turkey cooks in the oven, the bird perches in its cage. Sandra
became fascinated with these puzzles when she was about a year old,
presenting me with a dilemma: what to do when she puts the object in the
wrong box.
I've watched many parents over the years play similar games with their children. Generally what I've witnessed is the child places the dog in the oven and the parent responds, "No, Carlos, the dog doesn't go there. Where does the dog go?" The child looks up, hears the word "no," moves the dog to another location, perhaps the birdcage, and then looks up again to see if Mommy is smiling.
When I became a parent, I'd previously taught in classrooms for 20 years, so I find my parenting largely informed by the choices I've made as a teacher. I've always believed we should nurture children's imagination and help them to see possibilities in their own lives as well as in the world around them. In other words, our work as teachers is about opening doors rather than closing them. Which brings us back to the puzzle. When Sandra places the dog in the wrong location, how do I respond?
There are times in our lives when we do need to know the right answer -- which button to push on our television's remote control to turn it on, for instance. I decided when she played with her puzzle to never tell her she was wrong. Sandra now enjoys putting the objects in different places and we laugh together at the disjunctive associations.
I arrived at this solution because I simply wasn't comfortable telling my daughter the dog was in the wrong place. Who determines the right place for the dog to take a nap? Such approaches to the simple dilemma of a puzzle mirror the daily choices I make in the classroom. I have the same hopes for my students and my daughter. I hope they are able to see many solutions to a given problem. I hope they approach the world with a sense of imagination and adventure. Perhaps most importantly, I hope they may see things from different perspectives, and realize that indeed, the dog might be much happier resting in the barn.
"Just as computers and cell phones see improvements, so has meter reading technology," says Jim Plahn, sales support manager at Badger Meter. A two-way fixed network solution, ORION SE works with Badger Meter ReadCenter Analytics software to increase productivity and boost customer service. Once deployed,For the world leader in injection molds base services and plastic injection products. each ORION SE endpoint will synchronize communication with the gateway transceiver at one of three locations to process reading data. Transceiver locations will include Garretson's City Hall, its water reservoir and a third location on the southwest side of town. The system captures and provides the right information at the right time, helping utilities to respond quickly to customers, answer questions and resolve billing disputes.
Plahn explains another interesting customer benefit: "Garretson will have the ability to present data with overlays from the National Weather Service. This will allow them to show customers what may have affected their use of water or gas on an hourly basis, compared to the weather data."
At a utility customer level, the new system will also pinpoint areas of continuous use, which signals potential leaks. Customers can be notified, so they can make necessary repairs. At a system level, it will enable the city to monitor the amount of water it purchases from the rural water system, versus the amount it sells to customers. This will help the city to detect lost water and potential system leaks or issues that need repair. Other system features include tampering alarms, no usage alarms, register errors, and more.

Seahawks road to success must start now
That's been the mantra all week long for the
Seahawks, who know their playoff hopes hinge on being able to win one -- and
maybe both -- of their remaining road games this season.
And if this sounds familiar, well, it should. In preparing for a game in Miami last week, the Seahawks talked about needing to fix their road woes, needing to bottle up the formula that has led to a 5-0 record in Seattle and take it with them on a cross-country flight.
Then, for the fifth time in six tries on the road, the Seahawks came up short on the road. And as was the case in each of the previous road defeats, Seattle had chances to win the game late, but couldn't make the crucial play at the crucial moment to secure a victory.
"We've just got to find a way to get the job done, that's all I can say about that," said safety Earl Thomas. "It's really the little details, and we just haven't been able to get the job done in clutch time. On the road, we've definitely got to be able to win games on the road."
As Thomas points out, it's time -- past time, actually -- for the Seahawks to be a better team away from Seattle.

"We have a chance to win every game that we play, a legitimate chance to win every single one of them, and it's really frustrating to us, in particular on the road. We have found our way at home, but we're so much closer to really being a legit team and a team to contend with. We feel like we're really close."
Which brings us to this particular road game, and at least one reason for the Seahawks to be optimistic that today is the day when their fortunes change on the road. Their preparations may be as simple as keeping a bug-out bag in the car or as elaborate as building an underground bunker in the backyard. Though the practice has been around at least since the Cold War, recent political and economic struggles — and reality TV — have given it renewed attention. But since the entertainment media tends to show the culture's more extreme side, many associate “prepper” with a gun-toting, gas mask-wearing conspiracy theorist preparing for a nuclear apocalypse or zombie invasion.
The American Preppers Network, founded in 2009 as a centralized online location to exchange information, defines a prepper simply as someone who takes personal responsibility and self-reliance seriously.

And after my weekend experience, I concluded that if the average American is anything like me, she hasn't been using that sense when it comes to being prepared.
I was thrilled when 88 Tactical owner Shea Degan, a former Douglas County deputy sheriff, offered me the opportunity to participate in a dry-run of one of the company's aftermath courses. He has been a prepper for five years and appeared on a March episode of the Discovery Channel's “Doomsday Bunkers.”
The company, founded in 2008, offers instruction for civilians and military and law enforcement personnel The civilian courses cover topics such as self defense and firearms training.
Degan said aftermath course participants vary from “the curious adventure seeker to the die-hard doomsday prepper.”
The courses run from two days to five days and, through lectures and simulations, teach people how to prepare for an event such as a pandemic, economic collapse or natural disaster. Costs range from just under $500 to almost $2,000 for the five-day course.

Vanderbilt officials hope that Forrester, whose hiring was announced Wednesday, will end a sometimes heated controversy about religion on campus. More than a dozen student groups, including Vanderbilt Catholic, lost their official status earlier this year for refusing to sign on to the school’s nondiscrimination policy.
The groups require their leaders to hold specific religious beliefs. Vanderbilt officials said that practice violated school policy. The conflict led to accusations that the school was hostile to religion.
Forrester, who’s been a Methodist minister at Vanderbilt for 18 years, disagrees with that claim. He said Vanderbilt supports the spiritual lives of its students.
“I think we have a very open place for all kinds of religious expression and I want to maintain that,” he said.
One of the first tasks for Forrester, who will start his new role Sept. 1, will be to meet with leaders of the groups who lost their status. Many of them have been friends and colleagues for years.
He hopes to get campus religious groups focused on meeting the spiritual needs of students rather than the controversy.
“I believe that we can move beyond this immediate crisis and we can get back to work,” he said.

He worked at several churches before becoming a campus pastor at Austin Peay State University in the early 1990s and then coming to Vanderbilt in 1994.
Forrester said his early work in churches taught him how to set aside his own opinions in order to help meet the spiritual needs of his parishioners.
In an interview Wednesday, he recalled an incident that happened in 1991, when the United States invaded Iraq during Operation Desert Storm.
Forrester, who opposed the war, drove to church one day only to find some church members putting up ribbons and banners in support of the troops.
He felt that show of patriotism didn’t belong at church. Then he realized that one of the women handling the decorations had a son who’d been deployed overseas.
“By the time I walked over to her, I saw her hands shaking and I was able to be her pastor,” he said. “I had to put my ego out of the picture.”
That incident helped teach him the importance of having close relationships even with people with whom he disagreed. He said religious beliefs are very important, but relationships come first.
