It's not his life, simply a combination of a number of lives he was familiar with during his time growing up on Long Island.

"'Super serve your niche,'" Burns said.

But, the filmmaker wondered, "could I still do that with any authenticity?" After all, the self-described "local boy does good" is a long way from Valley Stream. A look at his body of work—not to mention supermodel wife Christy Turlington—can attest to that.

Still, Burns said despite initial worry, "all of these stories you grow up hearing, they're in your subconscious mind."

A similar element is seen in The Fitzgerald Family Christmas, where the older siblings are willing to give their father some slack, as opposed to the youngest two, who barely remember their father being at home.

Burns said of his work, "they need to have a real sense of place. I don't make films in Anytown USA."

As such, the house used as the primary location in The Fitzgerald Family Christmas was "six doors down from where I grew up," Burns said, since his parents have since sold their old house.

Comments from the audience ranged from his experiences in movies like Saving Private Ryan—"I turned and thought, 'oh my God, it's Tom Hanks,'" Burns said—to the costs for his usually low-budget films.High quality stone mosaic tiles. Greenleaf Compassion Center, located at 395 Bloomfield Ave., opened today and became the first medical marijuana dispensary in New Jersey.

“We are excited,” said Joseph Stevens, board member and one of the chief financial officers, about finally opening up the dispensary. “For the patients of New Jersey, they finally are able to procure their medication in a safe environment.”

The dispensary had scheduled about 20 patient appointments this morning who came from throughout the state, said Stevens. There are more than 370 patients eligible to participate in the medical marijuana program in New Jersey, with many more in the application process.

At 21C Museum/Hotel, 'c' stands for 'cool'

Since I moved here in 2003, a familiar inquiry from out-of-town travelers was often “is there a cool, boutique hotel in town?” In the past, said query was typically met with a collective shrug. While we have a fine stock of impressive, historic hotels, none of them would ever be confused with the latest Ian Schrager venture.

Well, shrug no more Cincinnati. After a striking and exhaustive renovation of the former 100-year-old flophouse known as the Metropole, the 21c effortlessly bridges the gap between historic hotel and cutting edge accommodations.

This past Monday, with its trademark, quirky, flightless waterfowl in attendance (in Cincinnati’s case—yellow, flightless waterfowl),Quickparts builds injection molds using aluminum or steel to meet your program. a host of assembled VIPs, media and onlookers gathered on sunny Walnut Street and cheered as Mayor Mallory, City Council members, owners Laura Lee Bown and Steve Wilson and other assorted dignitaries wielded their trademark ceremonial-ribbon-scissors and snipped away to unveil the “big reveal” inside. While the Metropole restaurant had been open for a few weeks, this was the first opportunity for many to tour the recently completed galleries, hotel rooms and other public spaces.

Celebrating its 100th birthday this year, the formerly dank and decrepit Metropole received a fitting and dramatic facelift, both inside and out. In its olden days, the SRO (short for “single room occupancy”) hotel featured shared baths, frequent police visits, tobacco-stained drop ceilings and—in one apocryphal instance—an employee falling through said drop ceiling into the Trattoria Roma restaurant which used to be located below.

That former restaurant space, virtually unrecognizable following renovations, has been retrofitted into a much lighter, stunning restaurant. The new Metropole space unearthed the original mosaic tile floors, and also opened up a section of the ceiling, restoring the vintage plaster work and ornamentation around the large, arched windows.

The new space feels light and open, a stark contrast from its former life, anchored by a mammoth hearth at the rear, which is the centerpiece of the restaurant. Another of the more interesting features is the mechanical, Dutch-made meat grinder at the charcuterie bar, reportedly acquired at a cost of $10,000 and refurbished by a noted “meat grinder expert” in Argentina, of all places. So, you know, no expenses spared here, particularly in the globetrotting meat grinder department.

But your humble columnist is no food critic, so you’ll just have to go and sample the cuisine for yourself. While the kitchen is still feeling its way and refining the menu, the anecdotal reviews to date have been uniformly positive.

Chef Michael Paley, formerly of Proof on Main at 21c Louisville, arrives in Cincinnati with an impressive resume, one which also includes Louisville’s popular Garage Bar, a popular NuLu spot featuring craft beers and wood-fired pizzas. Paley mentioned that they are looking at opening a possible Garage Bar in Covington, provided they can find the appropriate space (you know…a garage).

It should be noted that the title to this establishment is the 21c Museum/Hotel, and it is no coincidence that the “museum” comes first. This is not one of those artsy-type hotels that brag about having a Basquiat or two in the lobby. No, this is a full-fledged, open-to-the-public, multi-level, carefully curated contemporary art museum.

Take the time to wander through the first and second-floor galleries, spaces which include a once-closed but now-restored ballroom, as well as Turkish baths. While the baths did not survive, there is an interesting space in the former light well featuring bean bags on the floor and a nine-story, fiber optic tapestry/light sculpture by Danish textile artist Astrid Krogh soaring above.

Additionally, tucked near the back of the first-floor gallery, regular CAC visitors will recognize the ostrich chick video and costume by Israeli video artist Guy Ben-Ner, a piece which appeared at the CAC back in 2005.

Then again, there is art everywhere around the building—in the hallways, on the sidewalk, in the rooms, even in the elevators, where Louisville-born, Brooklyn-based artist Anne Peabody has transformed the cars into interactive spaces of art called “Time Capsules.”

In preparing the works, the artist engaged in extensive research regarding the history of the old Metropole, its uses and its evolution. Archival images, events and future fantasies based on that research were then etched by the artist onto the mirrored glass inside the elevators. Past denizens of the building’s rainbow-hued, smoke-filled subterranean watering hole known as “The Subway” will recognize the bar’s former logo etched into one of the mirrors.

The nod to the old Metropole’s checkered history is also evident when you first walk in the front door, greeted by a large, cheery display case featuring an array of camel-related collectibles—dolls, signs, lamps, etc.—anything and everything related to those humped, shaggy workhorses of antiquity. While at first glance one might think this to be an artist’s careful meditation on the exploitation of the noble yet lonely dromedary by the forces of crass commercialism and pop culture ephemera, its provenance is actually much more benign, as well as interesting.

The collection was acquired from the Metropole’s former building managers, Melvin and Johanna Lute, by 21c owners Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson. The Lutes, who met at a Garth Brooks concert in 1992, started their collection shortly thereafter. Demonstrating a passion for collecting and sharing, the Lute’s lived in the penthouse from 2002-10. During that time, they observed, there was “a lot of drug activity, fraudsters…rough people, and elderly folks” living in the building.

When touring the building,High quality stone mosaic tiles. Brown and Wilson came upon the collection, laid out in the penthouse in all its camel-themed glory, and purchased it from the Lutes. Installing their collection at the entrance to the building provides a nice link between the structure’s glittering present and its somewhat tarnished past, while also emphasizing the “art of collecting” which permeates the 21c.

Another no-doubt popular installation (due to the fact that you traverse it on the way to the first floor restrooms) are the shifting, organic “Healing Tiles” by Brian Knep, artist-in-residence at the Harvard Medical School (yes—Harvard Medical School has an artist-in-residence). The colorful, pulsating tiles are projected using a custom software--shifting and breaking apart as patrons walk across them, then constantly rebuilding themselves in different configurations in the pedestrian’s wake.

Of course, this is but a fraction of the artwork on display. Seeing as how it is free and open to the public, there is really no excuse for not wandering through the space and checking it out yourself. While you’re at it, make a day of it and check out the latest CAC exhibit as well.

But let’s not give the actual accommodations short shrift. The rooms are sleek and impressive, coming in a variety of styles and sizes, topped off with the super-chic corner suites. Bathrooms are stocked with Malin+Goetz bath products, and feature white, subway-style Rookwood tile custom installations, with random, bas relief body part tiles thrown in the mix.

According to General Manager Gerry Link, 54, the rooms would best be described as “minimalist luxury.” Link, who relocated from Portland to Cincinnati for the job, joined the 21c team in March of this year after spending 13 years with the Hilton Hotel group.

He and his wife now live in the Lytle Park neighborhood of downtown. Link sees the 21c as a very complimentary piece to the block, what with the Aronoff Performing Arts Center across the street and the CAC next door. He noted that they want to be a “good neighbor,” and “absolutely” sees collaborations with the CAC in the future.

The Belly Clan Eatery and Bar is the brainchild of five friends — Amanda Florencia Setiawan, Yohanes Randy, Olivia Heriyanto, Wenny Sutedjo and Waldheim Willim — who met while they were studying in Melbourne, Australia.

“Melbourne is a foodie’s haven,” Yohanes said. “Everybody there appreciates good food and drinks. There’s always a long waiting list at the favorite restaurants.”

Amanda added that they picked the catchy name because it represents their culinary concept.

It was the founders’ passion for food which inspired them to establish a restaurant of their own in Jakarta, after they had completed their studies in Australia between 2010 and 2011.

“A good friend introduced us to chef Hengky Efendy,” Yohanes said. “He’s a great chef with remarkable international experience. And he used to work at Maze, one of our favorite restaurants in Melbourne.”

In 2004, the chef started his career as a cook at The Savoy Grill, in London, where he worked directly under Michelin-starred chef Josh Emett. Since then, Hengky has worked in several top restaurants in the Middle East, Japan, the Maldives and the United States, before he was appointed as the sous chef of Maze.

Today, the 34-year-old chef helms the kitchen of The Belly Clan, and together with the five owners, Hengky has concocted a unique pan-Asian fusion menu for the restaurant.

“Pan-Asian fusion is sexy,” Hengky said. “It’s a blend of exotic Asian spices and Western food ingredients. It suits all palates.”

Diners should start with Korean beef tortillas. The beef, wrapped inside flour tortillas, is marinated in Korean red pepper paste gojuchang, before it is drizzled with sesame oil and sprinkled with sesame seeds. It’s tender and savory, with a kick of spicy tang.

Or, indulging in the nachos appetizer is also a sure win. The tortilla chips are served with tomato salsa with a sweet and spicy avocado wasabi dip on the side. The perfect combination of flavors will definitely tantalize your taste buds.

The restaurant’s mains represent a harmony between the East and West.

“There are over 200 types of red, white and dessert wines from around the world at the bar,” said bartender Aulia Rachman.

The list includes Louis Roederer Cristal 2004 from France, Opus One 2005 from Chile, Wolf Blass Black Label 2006 from Australia and Allegrini Amarone 2008 from Italy.

The Madame Choo cocktail — a milky-hued concoction of vodka, grape juice and lemon juice — is presented in a margarita glass with a crystal ball floating on top.

“The crystal ball is made of ice and contains rose petals, basil leaves and grape slices,” Aulia said. “It’s very pretty and keeps the drink cool and refreshing.”

Served in a brandy glass, the Great Wall is a simple, golden blend of brandy and amaretto. The bartender lights the drink on fire, throws cloves, orange peels and cinnamon sticks into the glass and allows it to cook for about a minute, giving the drink a heady exotic aroma.

Painted black and white with polished wooden furniture and ambient lighting, the restaurant exudes a warm, romantic feel that invites guests to linger. Its private dining room features a whitewashed brick wall, granite tiles and large gilded mirrors. The room consists of a long table and chairs that can accommodate up to 25 diners. Lunch was served in the café, though guests can opt to eat at Wyboston’s Waterfront Restaurant. There were lots of light bites, plus the option to create your own salad, but I plumped for stir fry duck with egg noodles, pak choi and sweet chilli, which was very tasty. Literally hours later, I managed the afternoon tea; dainty cakes, open sandwiches and warm mini scones with jam and cream, it was decadence personified.

Booked in for a hedonistic two-hour Elemis Absolute Spa Experience, I headed up the stairs to the treatment waiting room, which had a rustic feel to it. My therapist Katie was so adept at the full body massage and facial that I practically snoozed through the experience; hopefully she took this as a compliment.

We are voting for honesty and thrift in governance so that all of society will have a fitting chance to work and live in dignity. No one should be denied as a result of the greed of others. We are voting and voting for change. It is only an enlightened use of our votes that will bring about that desired change of equal opportunity for all.

We are tired and fed up with the humiliating torments of poverty and illiteracy. We are tired and fed up with our filthy, dusty and stinking living environment. What have we done for our ruling elite to punish us with such neglect and abandon? We work hard, pay taxes and only to be left to our fate while our over-populated neighbourhoods in urban centres rot from lack of basic services from our local authorities and politicians. Why do our ruling elite choose to punish us with bad roads, poor drainage and sanitation plus all the attendant preventable diseases that plague us day and night? We are fed up with expired food products like chicken, fish and meat that are allowed into our markets to kill us softly. We are tired of the fake drugs, drinks and condiments that bring us no health benefits but pains of death. We are fed up with witnessing our people dying so young from stress, hypertension, stroke, cancer, overweight and utter negligence on the part of some doctors and nurses in our hospitals. We only go to most of our hospitals to die.

This is why we are voting. We are voting for a new generation of leaders that will not steal from us, lie to us and corrupt every aspect of national life.

We are voting out corrupt and selfish leaders so that theft and waste can be eliminated for gargantuan savings to be made to create jobs, training, research and development opportunities for our army of unemployed, unemployable youth and graduates. A nation is on the verge of collapse when a vast majority of its youth wake up in the morning with nothing to look forward to. This time, we must use our vote to bring about change that will make life meaningful for our younger generation. I dare say that my generation, those ruling Ghana now, has betrayed those after us as ours is a legacy of state-sponsored corruption, tribalism and poverty. My generation, who enjoyed the best of everything that a new nation showered on its youth have betrayed Ghana and deserve to be voted out and give way to a new generation of competent and incorruptible leaders who govern by the example of self-sacrifice and loyalty to Mother Ghana. There is an alternative and it is our vote that will engender this new flowering of hope and trust in government.

Seahawks road to success must start now

That's been the mantra all week long for the Seahawks, who know their playoff hopes hinge on being able to win one -- and maybe both -- of their remaining road games this season.
